newbie needs help (almost there)

Hi,

Just joined the community and I am planning to go PRO for 2 machines.

But first I want to get the free version running to see if unRAID is really my cup of tea.

As you might already have guessed, since I am posting, I am having no luck in getting the server running.

Hardware I am using:

MB: Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R

RAM: 2GB Corsair

HDD: 16 x HD 103UJ Samsung

Highpoint Rocket RR2220 (I am using this only for the SATA ports, so no RAID installed)

My network:

HTPC living room

SERVER1 downstairs (work PC's for all ripping and occassional downloads, etc.)

SERVER2 downstairs (this was build on conventional RAID, but I hope I will be able to turn this in the UnRAID Server 1)

SERVER3 to come (currently already at 14TB data so server 1 will be filled in no time)

All PC's are connected to a 8-port switch. Onto this switch also the internet modem is connected and a Squeezebox Duet in the living room. Everything is hardwired.

I am using a USB flash I had laying around (Kingston DataTraveller 2GB). Formatted it as FAT. Installed the syslinux.exe file on it. Extracted unRaid 4.4.2 files onto the flash and I was good to go. Whent to the server booted up let unRAID do it's thing.

I do get to the login prompt, type "root". It returns tower@root~#. Go back to one of my PC's but cannot access http://tower (connection failed)

Back to server --> ifconfig eth0 returns almost only zeros (there where values are applicable) and I do not see an inet addr/Bcast/Mask They are just not listed.

On the switch all lights are green but solid, meaning connected but no activity. On th unRaid server the LAN connector is solid orange with a steday flashing yellow light.

So I suspect that my LAN on the unRAID server is not doing what it supposed to do or I am missing some settings and really need your help.  I am really a zero when it comes to command lines so please be patient with me.

I posted as much info I could think of, if anything else is needed let me know.

Thank you all in advance.

OK, I removed all HDD connections including the Highpoint card and only connected 3 HDD directly to the mainboard. Now if I boot unRAID inet addr/Bcast/Mask  are all populated. But still no luck in connecting to http://tower

Succes!!

I am finally online! Currently unRAID is intializing the 3 disk I attached.  :)

After this i will try the same with the Highpoint card reattached. Need to be sure that this works, otherwise I have not enough SATA ports.

And it only took me 8 hours to get here  ;D

I was going to point you to this post: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=1832.msg12908#msg12908

What did you find that made you system now work?

Joe L.

The motherboard is not yet on the Hardware Compatibility wiki page, but its chipsets are commonly used, so it should not be a problem.  However, I don't think the Highpoint card is currently supported.  Tom has been very good about adding the necessary support, on request, but that does not help you now, for your testing.

@Joe L.

The first time I booted unRAID ifconfig eth0 did not return any ip address and I boldly changed this in the config file of unraid (used the IP adres which I got from Vista.

Second attempt was taking out evrything which was not needed, which as a result gave me an IP address.

Third attempt was a clean install (formatted the Flash drive and started over). I did not know the old values which I had overwritten.

Next I am going to try the same with the Highpoint card. Hope this card is no going to cause issues. I'll post back what happens.

@RobJ

Actually I have both Gigabyte boards. The GA-P35-DS3R is the one I amusing for the unRAID server and the GA-EP35-DS3R is installed in my work PC. They are actually the same as far as I know. Some minor changes according to my vendor.

As I expected the combination of unRAID and the RocketRaid card does not work. I tried 3 drives on the RocketRaid, no luck. Tried 2 drives on motherboard and 1 on the RocketRaid, no luck. Tried 3 drives again only on motherboard everything is fine.

Now I came across this thread: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=1229.15

Does this apply also to the RR 2220 and how do I go about configuring a GO script?  There are several Linux drivers for this card: http://www.highpoint-tech.com/USA/bios_rr2220.htm. Which is the right one and how can I use it?

Really need to get this RocketRaid working. Buying new cards (eg. 1430 SA from Adaptec) will set me back €400 next to the wasted €300 for the RocketRaids (got 2 of them) is just not an option. And I REALLY want to go unRAID.

Please help.

You want the Open Source driver for Linux, near the bottom.  But unfortunately, you will need a very helpful user who has setup a suitable development environment, to compile the module for you.  I can't say whether anyone is available to do that.  They can then give you the right modprobe or other installation command, and indicate where it goes.
