going to v6 beta 14b

Featured Replies

So, I have long been holding out on upgrading to v6 and have continued to sit at 5.0.4.  Well, for some reason I decided the time is now.

So, the question is, what is all involved?

Can I make the jump directly to it?

What is the deal with the cache disk these days (I am using a spinning 150GB drive as cache, is that still good)?

Are there any gotchas that should make me stay at 5.x other that 6 still being beta?

Do I need to do anything special to get back to running or is it still just a matter of copying bzimage and bzroot and rebooting?

It's that simple if you don't have plugins or add-ons that need updated (i.e. if you're simply using it as a NAS).

If you're using plugins/addons, then be sure to read the guides that outline what you need to do to update those.

I have been using unmenu, but that's about it.

In that case you should be able to simply copy bzroot and bzimage and be good to go.

Just to be safe, I'd uninstall UnMenu and then reinstall it after the upgrade.

silly question, but now that a lot of things have been upgraded like the webui and plugins we ported, do unmenu still add a lot of extra features?

I go in phases where I keep up on all the happenings with unraid, then the whole xen, kvm docker explosion with a few member happened (stopped paying attention daily), then unraid got extra support, moved to docker, worked on the webui, did a bunch of other things and now I am back again trying to catch up...

With integrated UPS and notifications support in v6 there's far less need for UnMenu.

I'd uninstall it;  move to v6; and then see what you think.

Integrated UPS in V6? Where? i had to install the (64bits) APCUPSD plugin to get UPS support?

I'm not running v6, but according to the release notes APCUPSD was added in Beta 13, and a the GUI to configure it was added in Beta 14

Correct.  I do not need to install the UPS plugin in 14b to be able to use my UPS.

I am not sure what the effect would be of having the UPS plugin already installed when upgrading to 14b from an earlier beta.  I removed it before I did so just to avoid any potential conflicts.

I've installed beta 14 a couple of days ago but i could not find the UPS support, so i ended up getting a plugin...

@itimpi, where can i find the integrated ups support in V6?

I have a "UPS Settings" option under the System Settings section of the Settings tab.

Yeah, i do as well, but i only saw that after i installed the plugin ;D

I removed the plugin, rebooted, and you are right, it was there all along, i just overlooked it i guess :)

thanks guys, I will remove unmenu from my go script.  I did realize the one other thing I did install was the nice web gui for version 5.  Is that something that should be removed then?  just remove the plugin folder right?

Removing the plugins is more important than removing unMenu. Dynamix webGUI is integrated into v6.

Just delete the folder right?

Just delete the folder right?

I'm pretty sure that's all you have to do ... check for any entries in the Go script, and delete them as well if there are any.

OK, another thing that is changing, the option for the file system.

Being on v5 should I mess with this at all or will it just be ReiserFS?

I ask this because I set up a test system to preclear some drives and that is where I noticed this.  In that case, it is defaulted to XFS I believe.  Therefore, if using that system to preclear drives should this be ReiserFS or is XFS ok?

Then, once on 6, where is this best?  I know it is likely personal opinion, but still gonna ask.  Also, can this be changed without losing data on disks already ReiserFS?

A cleared disk is unformatted, so has no file system.

You cannot change an existing disk filesystem without formatting it, thus losing any of its data. unRAID can use disks with different file systems. Many people are moving to XFS for new data, and some are even moving old data to XFS disks. There is a sticky at the top of this subforum with a lot of discussion about this.

There's plenty of discussion r.e. the filesystem in the thread trurl referenced.

My nickel's worth:  Don't change your existing disks,  but format any new disks that you add to the system as XFS.

An important note r.e. converting to XFS ...

=>  Definitely do NOT do this until you are convinced you're never going to revert to v5, as that's not an option once you change the file system.    In fact, if you think there's some chance you might do this, I'd also format any new drives you might add as RFS until you've decided for certain you're staying with v6.

The Upgrading to UnRAID v6 guide has some new sections related to this, in the Other Topics section.  I'd be very interested in hearing if this is helpful, or if you think it is still missing needed info.

I'll take a look at the doc.  For what is here though,  as I understand,  going to v6,  copy the files reboot.

V6 will come up as rfs,  that setting will be xfs,  so new disk will be xfs unless changed to rfs.  But this will only come into play if I add a new disk or format one.

Correct.
