Marvell 88SE9235. unRAID Refuses To Recognize

Recommended Posts

Just purchased a SI-PEX40062 Sata PCI Express card (Marvell 88SE9235) and it refuses to work with unRAID. I have some previous trouble here with a similar card, and I am my wits end getting this to work.

Syslog attached to the post.

Numbers 02:00.0 and 07:00.0 are the card. No idea why it says 88SE9120. I have ran elkay14's script, and does not work. Looking into the script, its also looking for AHCI, which clearly is not there. I have not tried deleting this part and running the script. However, the card is absolutely running in AHCI mode.

I have a screenshot showing that my motherboard can see the drive in AHCI, and can even boot from it! However, it is too large to upload so I will omit it for now

Any ideas what I can do? I feel like I am so close, and just need a nudge in the right direction!

EDIT:

After doing more research here on the forms, looks like I am SOL, and this card will simply not work with Linux (here and here). If someone can point me in the direction of a 4 port PCIe SATA card around $40 USD (preferably from Amazon), it would be greatly appreciated. If so, this will be the 3rd card I need to return :-(

I've got a highpoint rocketraid 642L v2 that's running the same chip, likewise I have a single drive connected, as jbod, and it seems like the card is not detecting. I'm debating doing a quick 6.0 test (still on 5.06) to see if it works out of the box.

Does anyone else have experience with either of these cards?

Looks like I may have a different issue -

Hi all,

Did any of you come right in getting that card to work? I am now on my second controller card and no joy. The second card that I purchased was a HighPoint 620A 2 port Sata card. Another member here the card works for him and I have been trying to trouble shoot this with him...

My card POSTS and in the POST I can see the attached 1TB Western Digital drive, however in UnRAID I get no joy at all... Below is a grab of my system specs... as you can see below line 02:00.0 the card is being picked up in UnRAID. I have tried the script as well to no joy. I am running UnRAID V6.0.0.

Any ideas are very welcome as I cannot continue with my server build without being able to add additional drives and I am on my second controller card...

This thread is over 5 years old.

If anything Marvell support on Linux has gotten worse since then.

See here for some current recommendations:

Marvell controllers have not been recommended with UnRAID 6 for quite some time. Recent Linux kernels and Marvell drivers are a problematic combination, especially if you have virtualization enabled in the CPU.

Some can get them to work with kernel boot parameters or with virtualization disabled, but even if the controller/disks are recognized in UnRAID, they could randomly drop out at any time.

Sorry, I am on mobile and cannot provide more information but a search of these forums for Marvell controller problems should yield some Info. Certain controllers with LSI, ASmedia or JMicron chips are the recommended controllers.

Thanks ... yes, there is a lot of information in the forum, but most of them are 2 years old and / or with no results.

Probably because Marvell based controllers have not been recommended for at least 2 years and in a lot of cases there was no solution that made them work.

The only possible solution a few years ago was to modify the bzroot line in syslinux.cfg to this:

append  iommu=pt  initrd=/bzroot

The 88SE9235 is the only Marvell controller I've never had any problems with. I bought it before Marvell gained its bad reputation, when the MV-SAS cards were popular. It came on an IOCrest-branded PCIe 2.0 x2 card and provides two SATA and two eSATA ports (four internal SATA ports are an alternative). It uses the standard AHCI driver and works fine with SSDs, supporting trim. It identifies correctly, unlike the one in the post from 2015. It works fine with Unraid 6.9.2. It isn't the same as a 9215 or a 9230 or the 9120 mentioned above. I'm not going to say that I necessarily recommend it to anyone because I'd feel bad if you ended up wasting your money, just that it works fine for me and that if there is a decent Marvell controller out there this is probably it.

Finally made the swap from Windows Server 2012 to unRAID and I have IOCrest-branded Marvel 88SE9235 (SI-PEX40062).

I never had any problems with the card in Windows. In unRAID right now only 2 of the 4 ports work. Confirmed Windows is still detecting all 4. Confirmed it's the same 2 ports after swapping which ports are hooked up to which drives. Will keep digging but I kinda figured the card would work or not but I guess that's what some of the posts were talking about with drives randomly dropping?
