So i tried a reboot and I looked at the GUI (which takes 10 minutes to load a single page) and i have no red balls but i cannot get a drive to report temp, it just says *. I am starting to think i have a drive going out/bad drive. Just to be sure, however, did you try simply reseating the cables to the drive? Could have been a poorly seated cable that was requiring multiple retries ... if it had enough connectivity so it always eventually worked after a few retires, then it wouldn't have red-balled the disk; but would certainly slow down access.
