May 1, 201511 yr hi all! i have a 22 bay server, up and working great i have 4tb parity drive, and i want to upgrade to 6tb. i purchased a 6tb, put it in the server and ran preclear. drive looks good my question: can i just stop array, and deselect the current drive, and then select the new precleared 6tb drive? and then rebuild parity? i have read advice that says to physically remove the old parity drive, but i don't really want to do that because i have to find the physical location, which means i'll have to pull a drive, check it, pull another check it, etc. in other words, i haven't physically labelled the drive slots if the above works, i will rebuild parity, and then preclear the old parity drive, and add to the array as a data drive TLDR: is it imperative that i physically remove the old parity drive before rebuilding parity on the new drive?
May 1, 201511 yr It should definitely be possible to change parity without physically removing the drive. After you first change the parity drive to unassigned I am not sure if it is necessary to start/stop the array with the old parity drive unassigned to get the old parity drive forgotten, or whether you can go directly to using the new parity drive. Easy enough to check out though.
May 1, 201511 yr Any instructions to physically remove the drive first come from VERY old info! Drives used to be identified by their physical slots, a very long time ago. I'm afraid the wiki is full of out of date info, badly needs updating, or at least marking what is deprecated. I hope to start doing that soon, and hope others will help. It would be helpful if you could point out where you saw that advice.
