Low profile CPU cooling for SFF system

Featured Replies

I find myself inspired by the many threads on small form factor systems and have also realized I need to take backing up of my data seriously.  So I'm beginning to prepare to consider initiating a plan...

I came across this review of the SilverStone Argon AR06 cooler:

I realize that UnRAID itself probably doesn't tax a processor much at all, but the small size, decent efficiency, and impressive quietness of this cooler have me thinking it would be a worthwhile upgrade over stock.  Any thoughts on a HSF upgrade such as this, especially from you UnRAIDMiniMe builders?

I can't really think of any reason not to just use the intel stock coolers, which work just fine with modern Haswell-based systems.  But if you want a lower profile cooler that works very well these are certainly a nice option.

I used a Noctura NH-L9I in my most recent SFF build (a Lian Li PC-Q18 multi-purpose build).  I like it and recommend it.  The stock cooler probably would have worked but space is so tight in these small builds even with an SFX power supply that I just felt better going with a low profile cooler.  Depending on the case I'd definitely invest in an SFX power supply before an aftermarket cooler, though.

Absolutely agree with an SFX power supply.  I would NOT use any other unit in a mini-ITX build.

Have to agree with what's been said so far. The stock Intel heatsinks are more than sufficient for the job. If the choice is between an SFX PSU and an aftermarket heatsink, definitely go with the PSU. That said, it certainly looks like a nice heatsink and I'm sure it works well. If you're looking to upgrade your heatsink it looks like a good choice.
