Spin down needs to be greyed out, but why can't I spin drives up? -Dashboard: "Last checked on Friday, 1 May 2015, 19:22 (two days ago), finding x errors". "finding x errors" is from the CURRENT ongoing parity check. not from the last completed parity check. (had a 'bad' cable, previous check was OK, current not, that's how I saw this)

One reason would be that ALL of the drives are spun up at the beginning of a parity check. Are you saying that some (smaller) drives are spun down after the parity check has gone beyond the end of those drives? Is it creating some sort of issue for you?

Is it creating some sort of issue for you? yes, I have an array with mixed size drives . It's not a biggie (the Dashboard one is imho), but it doesn't seem right. I prefer to spin up drives (from the GUI) before I access them.

I prefer to spin up drives (from the GUI) before I access them. The spin-up button is disabled during a parity operation, but you can still spin-up individual drives by clicking on their status icon.
