May 26, 201511 yr Author alright I think I have accomplish that but I still cannot get anything to come up other than not connected to any network and browsers complain of not being connected to the internet. I set a static IP in the ethernet properties on the windows PC but when I do an ipconfig command in command prompt the ethernet adapter doesnt list any IP and says media disconnected so I am not sure if I am still doing something wrong.
May 26, 201511 yr Did you restart the Windows PC? It may not have released it's previous IP from your router.
May 26, 201511 yr Author I had not, I will attempt that this evening. Do I need to put anything specific for default gateway and subnet mask or just have them be the same on both machines?
May 27, 201511 yr Author alright I tried doing this with both the xrossover cable and the regular cable and I still cannot get the GUI to open.

May 27, 201511 yr i tried pinging the server from the desktop and got a transmit failed: general failure. from the server to the desktop I get destination host unreachable . this is all assuming I have set all the parameters correctyl See what the result is from pinging server to server and desktop to desktop. For example, if you set the desktop to 192.168.2.100 and the server to 192.168.2.101, ping both IP addresses from both locations and see what the results are. Also try pinging 127.0.0.1 from both locations. You should end up with 6 results, 3 from each location. Those results should help to locate where to troubleshoot next.
