SSD as cache drive

Featured Replies

Ok guys I bought a Kingston SSD to use as a cache drive.  Any negative thoughts on using it before I open the box?

Here is the one I bought:

Fry's had it for around $120.

I bought it to reduce power and add some protecton to my cache driive.  Recently my cache drive went tango uniform.

Lucklly I did not lose anything important but I feel like I dodged the bullet.

Send flames! :)

All SSDs are not the same.  The controller on that SSD is crap....  There are hard drives that are faster.

This is a MUCH better performer:

Cheap SSDs are useful where you want the environmental benefits (shock protection) not speed.  If you want speed, you have to go with the Vertex or similar ones with the better new controller... or the Intel.... otherwise, a much less expensive fast hard drive will be faster.

That's good to know.  How can you tell which SSDs use the better controller?

Also, I've read about MLC SSDs being crap and SLC SSDs being good...is that true?  Both the SSDs linked above are MLC.

The Indilinx controller is the key.  Avoid the JMicron JMF602 controller like the plague.

The OCZ Vertex and Super Talent UltraDrive ME are the best in the field now, IMHO, even better than the Intel except in certain places.... and a WHOLE lot cheaper.

I install the SSD and it works fine.  TerraCopy says 39MB/s using it as a UnRaid cache drive.

I ran it through the preclear utility and it said 90MB/s
