New Build Does Everything Look Right

Recommended Posts

Just checking to see if anyone thinks the hardware I bought should do the trick for a new build. My old one is on the way down. Don't need suggestions, just whether this will work or not. Already got the hardware so let me know if anything won't work.

Since you've "Already got the hardware" the build should work fine.

The only things I'd have suggested differently would be to use a CPU with a bit more "horsepower" and to get SATA cards aren't going to limit the bandwidth to your drives  [a 4-port card on a single PCIe lane will slow down parity checks and drive rebuilds, assuming you're using modern high areal density drives].

Thanks Gary for the quick reply.

As for the CPU I didn't think it made much different to me, I just use Unraid as a movie server and I'm not uploading to it all that much. If you think it's worth it I can get these today, what would you recommend?

The part you said about the Sata card confuses me. The Mobo has 10 on board Sata and I need at least 18 ports. Most my drives are 1Tb and 3 are a few years old 4tb and I'm adding 3 new 4tb drives. So I'm not sure what you would recommend to expand my need for more sata ports? TIA.

@HellDriverUK, thanks for the suggestion. I prefer something I don't have to mess around with, firmware and such. But I get what you're saying. Is there anything off the shelf I can use? I'm new to the whole SAS thing and don't know much about it, but I'm guessing I want a card that has 2 SAS ports and then I'll use a breakout cable to connect my SATA drives??

What about these, will one of these work?

I just tend to always go for extra "headroom" with the CPU -- i.e. more "horsepower" than you need is always better than not quite enough  :)    You never know just what you might want to do in the future.

The Pentium G3220 you listed scores 3191 on PassMark's excellent "CPUMark" benchmark.  The i3's you listed all score ~ 5000, so they would provide a very nice extra bit of "headroom" just in case you ever need it.  Specifically, the i3-4130 scores 4796, the 4150 scores 4919, and the 4160 scores 5049.  Any of those would be an excellent choice.

As for the add-in SATA ports.  The card you listed is a PCIe x1 card ... so it only uses one "lane" of the PCIe bus.  It's a v2 card, so that means its max bandwidth is 500MB/s ... which, with 4 drives connected, limits those drives to 125MB/s each (and the actual performance is generally lower than that).    Modern drives with 1TB platters can easily exceed 200MB/s on their outer cylinders; so this card would limit the performance of those drives when multiple drives were busy at the same time (e.g. during parity sync, parity check, or drive rebuild operations).

A better choice for adding SATA ports would be an 8-port card with an x4 or x8 interface => this would let it use 4 or 8 lanes of the PCIe bus.    The SuperMicro SAS2LP-MV8 is a popular card that has an x8 interface that will easily support 8 drives at full speed:  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816101792

I just thought of something I'm using a Norco Case, I don't have it yet so I'm not sure exactly, but it says "Five Internal SFF-8087 Mini SAS Connectors Support up to Twenty 3.5" or 2.5" SATA (II or III) or SAS Hard Drives"

So I am assuming that the case comes with Five SAS breakout to 4 SATA Cables. So I'm assuming the case has 5 SAS ports on the backplane so if I'm using the Supermicro 2x SAS Port, would I only need TWO SAS to SAS cables?

If so can you recommend one? I only ask cause from what I've read cheap cables are not the way to go. Thanks.

You're right -- if the case has SFF-8087 connections, you don't need breakout cables ... you just need SFF-8087 cables to go between the card and the connectors.  You'll need reverse breakout cables to go from the SATA ports on the motherboard to the drive cage backplane.

I'd wait until you actually have the case to be absolutely certain you get the right cables, but I THINK this is what you'll need:

(1)  To connect the MV8 card to 8 drives on the backplane, two of these:

(2)  To connect the motherboard SATA ports to the backplane, one of these for every 4 SATA ports [i.e. 3 of these to connect all 10 SATA ports}:

Ok figured it out. It doesn't come with any cable. It comes with 5 internal SAS Connectors. I have to supply the cables. So I'll buy 2 SAS to SAS Cables and 3 SAS to Sata Cables. Thanks for all the help.

Be sure the SAS to Sata cables are "reverse breakout" cables.    A common mistake is to buy forward breakout cables ... which are NOT what you need.

This may not be the best place for it, but I figured I'll continue on this thread.

So got everything built and up and running tonight, again thanks to all for the help.

Got a couple of questions. I'm now running V6. When I started a new config it showed that I had new disks, which I did. I added 3 new 4tb drives. Now it already started a new partiy sync and asked me to format the new drives, which I did. When they were formated it showed they were 4TB, but only had 2TB free and 2 being used, which of course is impossible. So it stopped the parity sync and restarted the computer. When it booted back up it still showed that half of the new drives were in use. So I just started the parity sync again.

So my two questions are why is it only showing the new 4tb as only half useful?

Also why is it showing that an entirely new partiy sync will only take like 11 hours?

Normally it takes like 3 DAYS to do a new parity sync or parity check. Is it becasue I'm now using real equipment, SAS, a faster computer and Unraid V6?

OK OK if you feel stupid raise your hand, my hand is raised. As I was taking the screen shot I noticed it said 1.99 GB not TB, LOL OOPS. My bad. It was super late last night and I was working hard to get the new unraid build, I was probably a little bleary eyed.

So everything's well.

Cool, glad to hear it. I always hated doing parity checks before as they took so long.

Thanks again.
