June 10, 201511 yr I am looking to upgrade my unraid server, and am looking for a budget SATA 4-port card. I do not need hardware RAID functionality, just good performance for media storage without any fuss. For media only storage would an x2 card suffice? what would sway me towards an x4? Any suggestions?
June 10, 201511 yr A PCIe x2 card has plenty of bandwidth for 4 drives (as long as they're not SSDs). An x4 is better if the drives are SSDs or if there are more than 2 drives. This should work fine for what you've asked for: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816124060

Another question, does Unraid gracefully handle disks switching from one controller to another? I am currently maxed out on my motherboards SATA ports. I wanna add another cache drive, so my plan is to move one or more of my media disks over to the new card and add the ssd to the faster MB controller. Would that work without too many issues?
June 11, 201511 yr No issues at all => just move the disks to any SATA port you want. It's been like this since v5 (v4 required specific assignments; v5 and newer track disks by serial #)
