[solved]Clean upgrade to 6.0-saving user shares

Recommended Posts

Short version:  How do I upgrade to 6.0 while preserving as much of my existing raid as possible?  Shares are the most important thing, plugins i can set up again.

Long version:  A drive failed. unraid version 5.0rc11 had a kernel panic 3 times while rebuilding with the replacement drive.  Finally got it to rebuild after downgrading to 5.0rc8a kernel.  I tried to follow the directions for upgrading to 6.0(latest) from 5.0rc11, but when the system came up it didn't even know its own name(named Monolith, not Tower).  So when I see Tower login: prompt, I know something is missing.  I copied config files for identity, network, shares, and disks to a clean 6.0 USB stick, along with the key and powered up again.  This time it new its name and could get to the internet, but had no drive assignments and the main page showed initial configuration.  I didn't want to power up and have it reformat everything, so I'm back at 5.0 rc8a.

There aren't any features in the latest unraid that i NEED, but I'd like to be on an actual stable release version instead of the release candidate I'm on now.

There is a good wiki article on upgrading to v6 that is very comprehensive.

You could have simply reassigned your drives (assuming you knew which was parity) and v6 would have picked them up without issues.    The reason that they were not being automatically recognised is that from what you said you did not copy the super.dat file that contains the drive assignments from the v5 setup.

Ah that is an excellent article.  I wish i had been able to find it earlier.  I'll read it thoroughly and update this with the outcome.

I hope it helps.

If you spot any area for improvement then feedback is welcomed.  That article is still a work-in-progress as we get more experience in the issues that people encounter while upgrading.    The issue is going to be to keep it simple enough to easily follow for those who are doing upgrading a relatively 'clean' system while still providing troubleshooting for those who have more heavily customised v5 systems.
