Discussion: Confusion around multiple dockers of same program

Featured Replies

So... trying to put myself in the shoes of new docker users and it got me thinking.  We have multiple dockers of Plex/BTSync/NZBGet/etc...  Am I wrong in thinking this is adding confusion to people converting from plugins or new users?

I imagine this is immensely confusing, even more so with the helpful 'giant list of docker repo's sticky thread.  I've been on 6 long enough to notice needo and gfjardim's were the first to have created a lot of the main ones, so I imagine most on this path probably stick with theirs, but for anyone not used to exploring this section of the forum, it's definitely a lot to take in all at once.

I know I have a duplicate of DDClient cuz Capt was nice enough to fix some issues in there when I was moving/changing jobs.

Part of me thinks we should really narrow it down to 1 per program.. but then binhex run's his on a different base image because he prefers the dev process there and other benefits of arch.

I don't know what the answer is, Squid's plugin did an AMAZING job at making it 100x more user friendly, but I think we need to go one more step.

Squid's plugin also gives the users a link to the support page for each. Maybe the users just need some more guidance on how to choose.

i'm in the process of adding info to my dockers, with a sparklyballs gif, if that doesn't sway people to choose my containers i don't know what will.

If the authors added to their overview the what makes their applications different it would make the choices easier.  (Or use the <changes> / more information section.

There is no other information from the templates that i can scrape to differentiate them

Thats a really good idea.  Say why users should pick theirs over the other in the description.

We can only give them the tools....

I agree.  I just think with the 6.0.0 release and the great contributions of the group, we need to change the focus from making more dockers, to making them accessible and non-threatening as possible. Going to start updating my xmls now :)

Awesome.  If you really want to do it right check out the categorizer plugin thread and there's a post in there about the changes section. (MobIle so cant give you a direct link)

Thanks again for all your hard work Squid.

I completely agree that having additional information to help users pick would be very helpful.  A feature set, if you will.

I know that for me, sometimes I'd like to know if I can get the bleeding edge versions, and there's really no easy way to tell by the repo.

Plex is a great example, as I know there are some that enable grabbing the PlexPass version.  For Sonarr, I'd like to be on the dev branch, and have it update as frequently as it would be outside of Docker.  And, if there's an easy way to tell, I'd like to know what the base image of the repo is as well.  Binhex makes that easy, but others, not so much.

Edit: Just thinking some more, updates and branch info would be some of the most important items for me, especially if it could be standardized.  For example, when updates take place (upon container restart, in-place, when arch repo updates occur, etc.).  Branches available (master, dev, beta, etc.).

mine are all phusion 0.9.16 ulitmately, there are some that call a different base image in the docker, but that base is based on phusion.

I agree it is confusing... It would really be nice to have 1 version  for general consumption... But also, there is the Arch version and the Phusion version right? Its like picking Betamax or VHS back in 1980.... or am I wrong...

I also think that people can take the plugin and fart around and create their own, tweaked out variation. Since they are all  open source, it can be easily done by the more tech savvy of us.

I believe that choice is good.  As long as you can tell the differences without reading multiple pages of forum posts.

I dont want to be in a situation that caused Henry Ford to state "...you can have any colour you want as long as its black..."

thank you for posting this.  I was just going to ask why there are so many and what the difference is with them.  I'm still on 5.0.6 and going to upgrade to 6 in the very near future.  Currently use plugins for everything, so what is the difference?  Looking at Plex, Sab, Sonarr, SB, CP

I will take down my version of DDClient as you have merged all the fixes/changes to your version and you are back around the forums again!!

Prob should have taken it down a while ago, sorry about that!!

Thanks smdion!!

or the version just released since my last post ?

I use needo's and if you stop the docker, then start it, it will download the newest version.

PlexRequests uses the same Plex icon. Not my fault :-p

I don't know... but this sounded a lot like a request for a new icon...  ;)

What do you think? The reflection glare thing a little too strong? I can change if it looks weird once at a small size.
