from HDD to SSD

Featured Replies

I am wanting to make a move from standard hard drives for my cache drive and into the lovely realm of solid state drives. My question is fairly simple but wanted to ensure that I did it correctly before I order my SSD drive in the coming days. I was planning on invoking the mover before I did the swap out, then just doing a disk to disk copy to one of my data drives in my array. Then stopping the array and installing the new ssd drives in a cache pool in unRAID 6 and then moving the files back again. Am I doing this correctly if I do it this way? Any way I would lose any of my Docker apps, or Plex settings?

I don't think so. I did this when I swapped my Cache drive from a WD Green HDD to a Crucial MX100 SSD.

Firstly I involved the mover. Then I "stopped" ALL my shares using the Cache drive. As I have allot of automation I didn't want something writing to the Cache drive while I was making these changes. Then I checked the Cache drive to ensure there was no data on the drive that was skipped (for whatever reason) but the mover or copied there in the small space of time.

I messed up in the first instance. I copied my Cache app dir's to the array (which is Cache enabled) but before I did anything I had a cuppa and saw the issue. So I dropped to the command line and copied the app dir's to the /mnt/user0/share thus bypassing the cache drive.

Then I added the SSD to the system (I decided to keep the HDD I had previously used for the Cache drive to add capacity to the array). Dropped the existing device from the Cache slot. Added the Unassigned device to the Cache slot. Formatted. Copied the app dir's to the new Cache drive. Done.

EDIT: obviously if you are going to go with a Cache Pool then you will Format with btrfs.
