DIY AV Rack

Featured Replies

About 3 months ago I injured myself whilst doing up my house and decided I needed a project that wasn't just watching TV. So... I decided to build myself a custom AV rack. Six weeks later, here she is:

Equipment list:

  • KEF iQ10 Speaker
  • Asus RT-AC66U running Tomato
  • PS4
  • Sky+ HD Receiver
  • Asus Nexus Player
  • Pi 2 running Kodi (can't see this)
  • Harmony Hub
  • Empty shelf is full of my network switch at the rear a Netgear 16 port jobby
  • Yamaha AVR feeding lounge TV on the other side of this wall
  • Yamaha Amp powering the KEF speakers in my study of which you can see one

Very nice! Did you consider alternate designs that would enable adjustable shelf heights?

I did but that wouldn't have given me the look I wanted.

The top 4 shelves are designed in a such way that they are able to accomodate 99% of consumer electronics that I'd be likely to put in my rack that aren't A) a server B) an amp. 3.25 inches seems to be enough to house almost anything, by the same logic TV stands follow.

Groovy looking lamp badger ;-)

Did you know a UPS works better OUT of the box?    ;)

Ahhh dang... I've left mine in the box.  Do I really need to change that?

Very nice design and well executed.

You sure have a lot of wall warts plugged in!

Are wall warts another Europe thing? I was sort of wondering why not just use a power strip... Although I will say they are at least very straight and level.

On a side note, the shelving unit is looking pretty nice!

I just got to say it

6 outlets, 6, i mean i think after the 3rd one you would have invested in a surge protector.

Anyway, nice RACK  ;)

Didn't realise you were in the UK ironic, whereabouts, I'm in Staffs

Love the rack

As regards all the wall outlets, that wall has been freshly plastered so ironic may have some surge protection behind the scenes...

Norwich but work in Cambridge.

Rewired the entire house and asked my spark to put in a ring main especially for my AV gear. It is surge protected at the board, no need for individual ones.

Thank you! And yes, unfortunately until manufacturers just provide a usb power lead for everything wall warts are here to stay.

The UPS box is empty btw and it is very much in use with my server in the other room.
