Transferring Data from Windows pc to UNRAID server very slow!!

Featured Replies

Hi, Just resolved my issues regarding setting up the UnRAID server and now wondering whats quickest and easiest ways to transfer data to the Server. I currently have around 7TB of movies to transfer to server as i have to format the drives when i add them to server my current plan is to add a drive to my windows based pc and transfer over network to my server but currently it says 1TB drive taking 22 hours. Ive not set parity drive as im sure i read somewhere this would slow things up but wondered if anyone had any suggestions.

cheers

Speed with a parity drive assigned would be slower.  1TB will take a long time over any network, even at Gigabyte speeds.

No easy solution exists other than to physically move the disks to the unRAID server (but not assign them in the protected array) and even then

it will take at least 4 to 5 hours to read all the data off of a 1TB disk.

Cheers for the reply Joe so i may be just aswell doing a drive at a time then and putting up with time (im not in a massive hurry)

Just if there was a quicker way id have looked into it.

As I said, to locally read or write 1TB of data takes a very long time too.    Queue the transfers up overnight and let them run as you sleep.

Thanks for your time Joe looks like i know what ill be doing for the next week..lol

Since you have just set up this system, it is possible that you may benefit from one or more of the tips on the Improving unRAID Performance wiki page.

As someone else has said, you may not be connecting at gigabit speeds.

If you will attach your syslog, someone may be able to spot something that can be improved.  It will usually show your network speed also.  Or you can use a console command to check the network speed, see the FAQ, unRAID Console and Addon Questions section, and go to the question on console commands, specifically those for networks.
