I'm preparing to upgrade a working data disk in v5.06, but I see differing explanations of the process.

Which is correct? 

Is the process different for v6?

Both will work.

 

The GaryCase method has some extra steps that do no damage if upgrading a disk, but also allow for the special case of attempting to rebuild a disk onto itself after it has been red-balled.
