Another question :) The disk has been successfully precleared. It took 30 hours and 23 minutes.

 

But there are some SMART values which I'm not sure if they might indicate an issue.

Is this anything I have to worry about?

 

ALL disks have raw read errors.  Some report them, others do not.  The numbers in the "raw" column are meaningless to anyone but the manufacturer.  The only values we can interpret are the "normalized" value (100) and the failure threshold (051).

 

In this case, the normalized value has not budged from its initial factory value of 100, and it is nowhere near the pre-failure value of 51.  In other words the drive is perfectly fine.

 

The ONLY raw values we can use are the sectors pending re-allocation and the sectors already re-allocated.  The temperature is usually readable, but even then on occasion a drive will report temperatures below ambient.  It is probably the raw temp on those model drives needs to be offset to get to the actual value.

I apologize.

 

The communications with the drive are very poor, indicating possible a bad SATA cable or poor connection.  Lots of the errors indicate the drive is attempting again and again to communicate with the drive and it keeps trying to reset it.

 

It could of course be a bad drive, or a bad drive controller, but the cabling is the most likely suspect.

These lines make me thing you have the SATA ports set to emulate an IDE drive since it is slowing down to PIO speeds in an attempt to communicate with the drive.

It's in the smart report. First column is current value, next is the worst recorded value, and next is the failure threshold value. The very last column on the right is the raw value that only the mfg knows what it means in most cases.

 

In your situation, in the Offline_Uncorrectable stat, your current value is 100, the worst recorded was 253, and the failure threshold is 000.

My results for 2 new WD EARS 2TB

 

I don't understand the results (nOOb alert!)  ???

 

It took 28hrs for both disks preclearing at the same time.

 

Comparing them to others results they look alright to me, but I'm no expert.

Reallocated, Pending, and Error rates all 0....looks good to me.

 

Just checking since you didn't mention it and these are EARS, did you jumper pins 7-8 prior to preclear?

If not, you'll probably need to preclear them again after putting the jumpers on and BEFORE adding them to your array

I've been corrected in another post, i was wrongly looking at the raw values instead of current values column.

 

What you should do is runn diff between the starting/ending smart reports and see if current value has changed between them for those rows.

 

also compare current versus threshold.

Wow, so I have a bunch of the WD20EARS drives and I've never jumper'd the 7-8 pins. Just noticed on the top of the drive it says "Windows XP, set jumpers 7-8 prior to installation or use WD Align SW". So is this really necessary for Unraid? I don't think the drives even came with jumpers.

Yes, it is absolutely necessary for unRAID.  Best case scenario, you are seeing decreased performance.  Worst case scenario, you will encounter corrupted data.  No, the jumpers don't come with the drives but they are cheap and you can scavenge them from old drives.  See the wiki for more info.

Attached are the preclear results for a 5900 RPM 2 TB Seagate (haven't upgraded the firmware yet), and two 1.5 TB WD EARS drives with jumpers.  I saw some worrying stuff on all of them, but I've misinterpreted this stuff before, so I would appreciate a second opinion.

The jumpers do not come with the drives. so I went to one of my local pc shops and they gave me a couple of jumpers, give it a try.
