Joe L.
I'd suggest you perform a full parity "Check" now. There should be no parity errors. (The sectors pending re-allocation are a different matter) Joe L. Quote Link to comment

Joe L.
Hi all, Can someone please take a quick look at this syslog of a drive that I gave precleared. The drive is a 1.5TB Seagate ST31500541AS. I have tried to interpret the data compared to other Seagates and I think it is OK (I hope) Your drive looks great. Thank youYou are welcome. optimus24
Hi! First time trying to run preclear as well as setup UnRAID. Did 3 drives at the same time. 2 Seagate(2TB), and 1 WD20ears (with jumper) and was wondering if my results look ok. The high errors compared to the WDC threw me off. Thanks in advance!! Planning on running them again, just need a baseline to see what I need to look for. WDC1Status.txt Seagate2Status.txt Seagate1Status.txt syslog122510.txt Quote Link to comment
BRiT
Once again, Preclear.sh only reports DIFFERENCES between SMART reports before and after. Your drive could be failing before and if afterwards it fails exactly the same, the Preclear.sh will not show any differences. Your drive could be perfectly fine before and if afterwards it's exactly the same, it won't show any differences. On the SMART reports, you need to compare the "VALUE" and "WORST" to the "THRESHOLD". As long as those first two VALUE and WORST are above TRESHOLD you should be fine as long as the "WHEN_FAILED" column is clear. In most cases the RAW_VALUE is only of interest to the drive manufacturer, though there are some few data items that are of interest to the users, Id #5 - Reallocated_Sector_Ct, Id #196 - Reallocated_Event_Count, Id #197 - Current_Pending_Sector, Id #198 - Offline_Uncorrectable. I do not see any "errors" on your drive reports. Quote Link to comment

A few minutes later the system locked up. Will have to reboot I still have to retest this Seagate hdd which is a warranty return, Originally I ran this with two other pre-clears and everything ground to a halt and I had to reboot and i could not tell if the pre-clears finished on the other hdd's so I ran the pre-clear script on each drive individually. Should I bother to run a pre-clear on this hdd and will it just do the same again and fill up my ram untill the pc hangs. Thank you Quote Link to comment
Joe L.
It will likely fill the syslog and crash the server again... but if you start it and see the errors in the syslog, just stop it. It is probably just a bad drive, unless it is a bad disk controller port, or a power supply unable to keep up with the power demands. Quote Link to comment

I tried the hdd on the mobo port and an mv8 card, the hard drive failed both times, power supply is single rail 650 watt so should be no issues there. I will run the seagate tool on the drive see what happens. Trouble is a 500gb hdd is hardly worth the postage cost to return it now Quote Link to comment

Joe L.
How do my 3 drives look?We cannot tell by what you posted other than the reports say the disks were successfully pre-cleared. The output from the pre-clear was the difference, as reported by the Linux "diff" command, between the smart report taken at the beginning of the pre-clear process and the one taken at the end. What your printouts you show are the factory initial values of 253 being replace by a new starting point of 200. This is normal for almost all drives and brands (some start at 200, some parameters start at 100) Since we only see differences, we have no way to know if a parameter was failing initially and is still failing in exactly the same way. (it would not be different, but identically failing, so not show in the "diff" output) As far as we can see, all looks fine. Joe L. Quote Link to comment

It has not moved from the initial value. Since the current value is not equal to or less than the failure threshold, this SMART parameter has not failed. The raw value has meaning only to the manufacturer, and they are not telling how to interpret it. Sorry to tell you this, but you were scared only because you've not yet learned how to read a smart report. There is nothing wrong with that parameter. Joe L. Quote Link to comment

Yes, the drive has stopped responding. (and the script was not coded to deal with that very elegantly) Most people find they'll need to power cycle the drive to get it to respond again. Even after that, many have had to clear the first few sectors to get it to respond sanely after changing the jumper (or adding it after the drive has been used without it being installed) Basically, we've found it does not even respond to anything when locked up. Not even an fdisk -l /dev/sdb will get complete results until you power cycle. As far as skipping "tests" sorry... can't unless you don't want to clear the drive and ensure it is cleared. Joe L. Joe L.
Looks like you're right about that, 'fdisk -l' no longer shows sda. I'll reboot once the other drive is done with preclear'ing. When I wrote the script I never anticipated a disk would simply stop responding. My newer version of preclear_disk.sh should handle it better. (It won't make the disk respond, but it will exit more cleanly when the disk does not respond. Would you like to give it a try? I can zip it up and put attach it for a quick test. You are perfect for the test, since you have a disk that is not responding right now.) Joe L. Quote Link to comment

SSD
5 Reallocated_Sector_Ct 0x0033 095 095 036 Pre-fail Always - 216 There are a lot of Raw_Read_Error_Rate however it went down? The reallocated sector count at 216 is a definite problem. It is encouraging that you were able to preclear the disk without the count increasing! Otherwise the difference would have been highlighted by the preclear output. But I have never seen a drive with more than 1 or 2 reallocated sectors that didn't continue to degrade with each parity check (although I've read reports of people with over 100 that have held steady). If this disk were in the array, I would suggest that you run a parity verify (read only parity check) and see if the 216 number holds steady. If it did, I would suggest running another one. If you could run 3 in a row and not have the number increase, maybe the drive is okay. But since you are in the preclear stage, you might want to run it through 3 preclear cycles. If the number holds steady, I'd consider trusting the disk. But it would be a world's record of most reallocated sectors on a stable disk from all the smart output I've seen! The other attribute to monitor closely is the current_pending_sector. This is the number of sectors that have been flagged to be reallocated. You did not post this value. The "raw read error rate" is nothing to be overly concerned about unless and until you start to get close to the threshold for failure. And you are no where close. This is a good example of where the diff list of pre-preclear smart output and post-preclear smart output is not sufficient to identify all problems. Quote Link to comment

SSD
redia - Looks good. Of course, this is only showing the difference between the smart report before doing the preclear, and the smart report after doing the preclear. If the disk had a serous problem before you started and didn't get worse in the preclear, this would not show it. Quote Link to comment
