Having had some problems with an EARS few weeks ago i decided to run preclear a second time, just to be sure.  I have been away for some time and when i came back i reconnected using screen. I guess preclear was over and i saw this screen:

So, what does that mean? Could preclear, have stoped abruptly?

Popped in an old drive which I thought I would use as a cache drive.  However when running preclear I got the following results which I assume means the drive is bad.

Popped in an old drive which I thought I would use as a cache drive.  However when running preclear I got the following results which I assume means the drive is bad.

It indicates that zeros written to the drive are not being read back as zeros.  (Could be an effect of a poor power supply and the drive being sensitive to noise on the supply line, or, a defective drive, or even a defective port on the disk controller.)

It certainly indicates you do not want to trust it for your data.

I just precleared two drives for the first time (I'm setting up my first unRAID server).  The drives area Hitachi Deskstar 2TB and a WD20EARS.  I think everything went accordingly but I can't really make heads or tails of the preclear results so I'm hoping I can be assisted.

Here is the first part of the results:

Sadly, second EARS drive in a row to fail preclear. Tried it twice, using different sata cables and controller cards. Here are the results. Is this a bad drive, or something else?

Impossible to tell from that output the root cause.

Obviously the drive is not writable.

Were both drives in the same drive cage?  Using the same power connector?  Perhaps that is it.  Were they both dropped by the same UPS delivery person?  Perhaps that is the answer.

Can you get a SMART report from the drive?  Does it respond to an hdparm command?

smartctl -a -d ata /dev/sdf

hdparm -I /dev/sdf

Hi Joe,

Thanks for the quick response! In answer to your queries:

Were both drives in the same drive cage?

Yup. Regular non-hot-swap 4in3s

Using the same power connector?

hmmm... Good question. Not entirely sure. I swapped sata cable and port, but not sure about power supply cable. I'll try that next. As far as the power supply itself, it's a Corsair 750watt...

Were they both dropped by the same UPS delivery person?

Nope. I bought 2 at once at first. One was fine, second was bad. Returned for new one. It is also misbehaving...

Can you get a SMART report from the drive?  Does it respond to an hdparm command?

Here it is:

(NOTE: Drive changed from sdf to sda because I swapped controller cable after it failed the first time this morning)

Linux 2.6.32.9-unRAID.

Hey Joe L., not sure what to make of this output seems like others experienced similar results with EARS in previous posts. Hopefully nothing too bad, thought I'd post the results anyway. First drive I preclear with these results with the same controller. Added jumper on pins 7 & 8 before preclear.

The drive is a brand new WD15EARS. Thanks in advance.

So got an RMA hard drive in for the one I posted about last time about a week or so ago.  It went much faster, took about 30 hours with no errors except for the stuff at the end.

This is what I got after preclear on a new WD 2TB black. Looks like it is good except for the SMART error. Any suggestions?

I'm not sure what to make of the data collection never started/suspended, but I had exactly the same SMART report from my WD20EARS (green):

I believe that the load_cycle is normal, but I'm puzzled by the change in seek error rate parameters (although the error count is zero?).

I believe that the load_cycle is normal, but I'm puzzled by the change in seek error rate parameters (although the error count is zero?).

The value 253 is used by manufacturers as an initial value until the drive is put into use.  All you are seeing is the new "starting" value of 200 being instantiated.

Perfectly normal.

Maybe this should go in the support forum but I figured I would post it here first.

I have been seeing a lot of drive errors in my Norco 4220 lately. Two of my recent drives start showing errors as soon as I put them in multiple slots. This last drive has failed at exactly 99% of the preclear disk pre-read. The first time my server froze up and was unresponsive and I had to restart it. It is currently in slot 9 if you count from left to right from top to bottom. I also put it in slot 17 with the same result. I tried to preclear it last night and didn't notice anything wrong but woke up this morning to see this in the syslog followed by 2 gigs of drive error logs.

Also, when I start the preclear, I see this log.

Nov 30 07:48:56 Tower preclear_disk-start[4093]: A mandatory SMART command failed: exiting. To continue, add one or more '-T permissive' options.

It is trying to invoke the smartctl program on your drive.  The drive is not responding.  (for whatever reason)

You can try to see if typing

smartctl -T permissive -d ata -a /dev/sdf

and see if it responds with a smart report.

Joe,

I'm trying to preclear 4 2T samsung drives.

3 are chugging along but one failed right after zeroing.

I grabbed the first smart report as the drive, now, is un responsive.

There are some errors reported.

I'll try power cycling once the other drives finish (about 2 hours or so) and see if the drive comes back.. and grab another SMART report... but my guess is this drive might be a dud!

Do you concur?

I'm guessing it could just as easily be a loose/bad cable to the drive.  But do not touch them now...  Only do that after stopping the array cleanly and then powering down.  (It could be either the power or data cable, or, if in a drive tray, it might not be seated well in the connectors.)
