July 30, 200916 yr I picked up a Trendnet 8-Port Gigabit switch from Buy.com. It's another questionable company but it only cost me $10 in the end and I must say... the switch feels like it's very decent in terms of quality. Metal exterior and much heavier than I expected. The weight is a good sign to better quality components inside. So far the switch has worked very well for me and I don't regret the purchase whatsoever. My $10 price was a fluke... but it regularly goes on sale for $20-30. I do still recommend a more reputable company... but so far I'm not regretting this switch at all. Is that one of the "Green" Trendnet switches? I picked up one up for about $40 after taxes (Canadian) - it looks rock solid, I bought a Trendnet router a few years ago with USB Wifi adapter for $10 after MIR and it was the biggest pile of garbage I've ever seen - I ended up hooking it up at my parents house for times when I'm at home and want to use my laptop - I'm 20 feet away and getting 1 bar of signal. I must say their Green Switch is rock solid though, I was impressed - most reviews say it was pretty good as well.
July 30, 200916 yr Yep it's that green model. I was extremely surprised by the weight of it when I picked it up out of the package... definitely good build quality in there. Stays very cool too which I'm all for lol. I would have been more than happy to pay $30-40 for it.
July 31, 200916 yr Author Got it and it's working (also ethtool reports 1000MBps connection). To my Mac Pro I get about 45MBps. Right now on my PC I'm ripping a BD and uploading from Drive C: and downloading to a USB HD simultaneously at about 25MBps to 30MBps each way. I guess if I wasn't ripping and only going 1 way my PC speed would be a little higher.
