Is is possible to migrate an unRAID instance from one machine to another

Featured Replies

Hi folks,

I relatively new to unRAID (but not large storage servers - I have used WHS, 4 and 8 drive RAID 5 arrays on Windaz) and one my RAID 5 boxes is dying. I have a spare machine (that I was building up for a MCE - Quad Core, lotsa RAM, lots HDD storage onboard 4 x 1.5 TB HDD - but it has a small case) that I would like to use temporarily and then replace with a more permanent solution.

So my question is ... given that all the configuration is located upon the USB flash drive ... and if the drive ports are recognised within both Motherboards (temporary and  final home) can i just setup the unRAID on the MCE box (with the 4 x 1.5 TB drives) and then simply transplant the USB stick and 4 HDDs into the new MB and case once I have finalised all the parts and put it all together?

This setup will be in place for a few weeks whilst I raise the funds to get a new box so I can't just "build the final unRAID box now" :-)

thanks

Yes - this will work.

It is likely, however, that you will have to reassign your disks to the proper slots once you put them in the new machine.  Just keep notes of what drives are assigned to party and to each of the disk slots.  Once you get them right in the new machine, unRaid should start with no complaints.

Thanks for the prompt response :- )

I will take note of the current drive assignments (screenshot) before I do the migration.
