June 30, 201511 yr How many sata ports are on your motherboard. I use a SUPERMICRO AOC-SASLP-MV8. Supposedly you can fit two in a system with no issues. Each can support 8 drives. There are others.

June 30, 201511 yr You can use an 8 port card in a x4 slot. PCIe2 is 250-500mb per channel, most spinners don't transfer more than 200mb/second.
June 30, 201511 yr The number of sata ports supported on the MB determines how many, if any additional ports are needed via expansion cards.
