Norco SS-500 5-Bay cage, 3 of them, how many cards?

Featured Replies

Ok,

If i want to use three of the Norco SS-500, what card would you recommend? What cables as well?

What are the best three cards available?

Will a single card be able to connect all three cages?

How many sata ports are on your motherboard.  I use a SUPERMICRO AOC-SASLP-MV8.  Supposedly you can fit two in a system with no issues.  Each can support 8 drives.

There are others.

Is it better to connect directly to the SATA ports on the motherboard or via a card?

Any difference btw?

if PCIe slot operate at x8 electrically then no speed difference compared to mobo SATA ports with 8 HDD on that card..

You can use an 8 port card in a x4 slot. PCIe2 is 250-500mb per channel, most spinners don't transfer more than 200mb/second.

The number of sata ports supported on the MB determines how many, if any additional ports are needed via expansion cards.

For example, this board can support 14 sata drives.  http://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboard/xeon/c220/x10sl7-f.cfm  This is the MB used by LT.  Why dont you just re-purpose your current controller/expander you list in this post.
