Need advice on connecting HDDs to mobo + PCIE Controller

Featured Replies

Hello guys,

I've selected a case for my build that would accommodate 24 hard disks.

I would using some parts from my desktop computer.

CPU: Intel® Core™ i5-3570K

Motherboard: ASUS Maximus IV Gene-Z/GEN3

Case: EDNSE ED424H48-T3

HBA: Dell Perc H200

The backplate for the case looks like:

There would be a total of 6 backplates.

My question is, If i were to have 6 sata ports on the mobo, and 2 x Dell Perc H200 controllers (IT), how do I connect all these to the backplate to support 24 hard disks? I understand that the controllers are able to accomodate 16 hdds without using a SAS Expander. With the other 6 ports in the mobo, i would be able to connect another 6 hard disks. I could get another PCI-E card that could hold the other 2 hdds however I am confused and unsure of how to do this. What sort of cable would I need to connect the H200 to the backplate, as well as the mobo to the backplate?

I appreciate your advice / feedback on the best way to go about.

By the way, I am from Malaysia, where the Norco cases are not available / more expensive to be imported.

Judging from the link you provided, you need to get 2x of the SATA backplanes (vs the current SAS backplanes) to hook up the last 8 drives to the mobo via SATA cables. Else you should grab another SAS expansion card with at least 8 drive support via 2x 8087 SAS connectors. Another of the DELL Perc H200 is ok for this.

For the cables, you will need 6x 8087 to 8087 (internal) SAS cables for the H200 and the backplanes.
