July 29, 200916 yr I am trying to setup my server so that access to "tower" in network places is password protected. I setup passwords for root and a user name for myself, but that doesn't lock out "tower" access from network places. Any suggestions? Thanks!
August 5, 200916 yr This isn't exactly what you want, but its close. You can set passwords on user shares and (I believe) disk shares. Therefore, an unauthorized user would be able to see 'Tower', open it and see the list of your user/disk shares, but wouldn't be able to go any further. So they would be able to see the names of your shares (Movies, Music, Backups, disk1, disk2, etc.) but they wouldn't be able to open them and see your actual files without knowing the password.

There are a couple of ways to go here. 1 - Samba provides a means to HIDE share names. If you hide them no one can see them. If they happened to know the name, and tried to access, they would be challenged for a userid/password. 2 - You can share one level higher - so that the entire machine (e.g., Tower) is a share and the individual shares appear as folders within the main. Joe L. explained how this worked in a recent post. In order to hide your shares, you need to dig into the custom Samba features that are available in unRAID.
