Cheap Xeon ?

Featured Replies

Hello, I'm upgrading my Server to Version 6.  I really don't quite understand the Dockers vs Packages, but would like to have my Server provide a Plex function, General Storage and perhaps VM's (I currently run Parallels on a Mac).  I would rarely run more than 1-2 simultaneous Plex conversions.

I've found a inexpensive HP XW8400 Server using 1-2 Xeon Dual Core 5130 (2.00 GHZ) Woodbridge Chips.  Would this work for Version 6 w/o high demands?  The MB has 6 SATA (1 HS) & 4 SAS.  I am currently running 6 drives from 2TB but have 2 new 5TB drives to add to the mix for maybe a total of 6 again in multiples of 5TB or less.

Thanks for any thoughts!

Dave

No it won't.

The 5130 has a passmark of 1,700. Probably not enough for a single stream. My Celeron G1840 gets 2940 for example and struggles with a single stream.

It's also SEVERAL generations old.

Further to mr-hexen's explanation.

When looking at any cpu you want to determine it's passmark score, which can be done via the following website:

http://www.cpubenchmark.net/

You can look up any cpu commercially available (including historical cpus) and determine it's passmark score. When looking at Plex you need around 2000 passmark per stream. So, if you want to run 3 streams you need to ensure the passmark is 6000 or higher.

This is a fantastic site to reference any time you are looking at buying a new cpu. It can help you understand if you are getting a good value for the price, and whether adding an extra $10-15 can give you a good jump in performance, or if it's a waste of money.

Any time I am looking at buying a new cpu I will usually pick a price point, then compare 3-5 cpus around that price and pick the one that gives me the best bang for the buck.

Much Obliged, thanks for the feedback and info.  Back to the drawing board!

Thanks for the feedback, I've also found another HP using an E3-1240 (3.3 GHz) which I believe has a Passmark of 8107.  Would this work for my replacement?

Yes that will work. Where did you find that server?

Newegg has quite a few for about $ 300 w/Win7 Pro installed.  Not sure if I care as much for the Case but "motherboardectomy" may provide a solution.  About the same price as eBay for MB w/o Chip or vice versa online.

The Xeon by itself is going for $160-$220 and the Windows licence will be upgradeable for free to Win10.  The MB, case and memory etc are free.  Not bad.

Can't tell if that mb is unRaid 6 VM friendly.  Would be good to know.

Be careful about plans to pull the MB out and pop it into another case. Sometimes OEM's like HP or IBM make their own proprietary MB dimensions.

Also, the specs on the case say max three 3.5" drives (but there are three 5.25" slots you could use a 5in3 rack with).

Thanks for the tip re-MBectomy (supposedly ATX)!  I concur with 5in3 and I think my current 4in3 will work as well for a total of 7 drives if the 400W PowerSupply will support it.  Not that I need it, but there is also space below the included drive cage for an additional "cage" robbed from another case :o !

In reading about this unit, the question is will it work for Version 6 as asked above?  The fact that it's an 1155 slot gives rise to possible chip upgrades and I've seen some reviews showing the Z210 with different chips some faster some slower.

Again Thanks for your input and thoughts!

Someone already answered it ;)

But yes, it should work with v6.
