What is a typical harddrive temperature and when should I worry?

Featured Replies

I was making some changes to my case and have left the sides off. Recently I looked at unraid and noticed it was reporting the harddrives at 100 F. I had never really paid attention to the temperature reading before.

Is that a normal temperature? Am I doing unnecessary wear on them getting that hot with the sides off?

Hard drive temps are typically reported in degrees C, not F.

100F in 38C, a very safe temperature.

I start to get worried if drive temps go over 43C. 50C, for me, would be entirely too hot and require some additional cooling.

But 43C is 109F, and 50C is 122F.

It all depends on the hdd model. Some newer drives have what the mfg considers safe temps all the way to 60 C, while older drives consider 50 C the safe limit.
