Now works completely. All disks have been added and parity has been established and checked.

 

Tips:

 

-In the bios I had to set the 'usb mass storage emulation type' to 'all fixed disk'.

-Copy speed is 11mb/sec- In hindsight I should have connected data disks to mobo sata ports and used a gigabit pci card to transfer files, then switched one of the drives to pci sata card when adding the parity drive.

-Parity calculation took 5 hours.
