Create serial port in VM and connect using putty

I am playing around with vyOS in a VM. Managed to get it up and running, but next step I like to create a (virtual) serial port which allows access to vyOS instead of VNC.

 

Has anyone experience with how to create a virtual serial port and what is needed for putty to connect to it ?
