Win10 VM refuses to update to RTM 10240

Featured Replies

Anyone else notice their VM has trouble auto upgrading?

Mine sees the update, and attempts to install it, but fails and reverts back to 10162.

This VM doesn't have any pass through defined.  Just a simple install that started at 10074 and autoupdated several times to 10162.

I've had this issue as well.  A fresh install always works, but I can never get it to upgrade either via windows update or by booting from the ISO.  Always get a blue screen on restart with a generic error that isn't very helpful.

Just did mine yesterday and it updated just fine from 10162.

This is on a VMware Workstation v10 VM ... not with KVM under UnRAID.

Mine is a KVM VM on 6.01

I created a new VM with 10240 RTM, but doing it that way it is not activated.

There could be issues with VirtIO drivers and windows 10.  The best way to verify if issues are the cause of this would be to edit the XML for a VM to not utilize those paravirtual devices (network, block storage, storage controller, and memory balloon). I can post instructions for folks to try that, but not sure if I would even go down that road as VM overhead will increase using an emulated stack for those devices.

Windows 10 guest support will happen eventually, and I don't even think that far out, but right now, its a bit of a crap shoot for folks using preview release versions and various upgrade paths.

I successfully installed a new Win10 RTM 10240 VM with those same virtio drivers.  Wouldn't that have the same issues with virtio if that was the problem??

Haven't tried pass-through on Win10 yet.

Digging deeper into the failure to upgrade, it would appear that a 30gig VM disk is not enough.  It is complaining about lack of space.

How do we increase the size of a KVM VM disk image in unRaid 6.01?

Two step process:

1) Stop the VM.

2) From the VMs page, click the name of the VM (not the icon) and a menu will extend down with a field for the vdisk size.  Click the number and you can edit it to increase it, then press enter.

3) From inside the VM in Windows, use Disk Manager to extend the partition for your virtual disk to begin using the extra space.

I had thought this earlier as well (was also using a 30GB disk), but I'm currently running on a 45GB VM disk with 25GB free and it's still a no go.  Please report if you are successful and how big you ended up needing to go.

I just successfully upgraded from 162 to 240 in my KVM VM.  Took several hours to run but no issues were reported.

Yes that was easy, however Windows has set up their partitions such that there is a small restore partition at the end of the 30gb partition.  Increasing the space to 40gb as per above only results in 10gb that is not accessible to the Windows C: drive.  You can't expand it without moving that little recovery partition.  So instead of doing that, I was able to free up 5gb when I cleaned up the existing drive by deleting the old Windows version from the beta process and the temp files.  Getting 11gb free was enough to let it load successfully

Go into Windows and see what windows is really reporting as free space.  You likely have 15gb unused free space after the end of a tiny recovery partition.  Windows may not have as much space as you think.

I double checked and have plenty of free space.  My setuperr.log file after the failed update contains the following, but I haven't had any luck tracking down exactly what's causing the problem.
