July 22, 201510 yr Hello all. Quick question re: iLO on HP Microservers. I'm running my Gen 8 server with no monitor. I want to make some changes to certain BIOS settiings, WOL etc... I understand this can be achieved with iLO. Does anyone have any experience with this? Can I access iLO at anytime or only during the boot sequence? Thanks.
July 22, 201510 yr iLO is available at all times. its a completely separate processor, etc from the server. Therefore, its also uses a different IP. You would access it from your browser on that IP. You can discover the IP either on your DHCP server (it should be called "ILO" + part of the serial number), or hook up a monitor and you will see the IP on boot.
July 22, 201510 yr Author Thanks! Ok that makes sense. But I see no "iLO" through my router. At the moment I am using network port #1, which I think can carry iLO traffic right? (rather than using the dedicated iLO network interface). Or do I need to configure this somehow? Cheers.

I only use "bigger" HP servers and we always use the dedicated port.
July 22, 201510 yr Enable the MicroServer shared iLO functionality The shared iLO functionality on the server is disabled by default. To use this functionality, do the following: 1. Access the iLO RBSU by rebooting the server, and then pressing F8 during POST. 2. Under the Network menu, select the NIC TCP/IP option. 3. Set the Network Interface Adapter field to Shared Network Port — LOM. 4. To save the change, press F10. 5. To close the iLO RBSU, under the File menu, select the Exit option. but I believe you will need to purchase a iLo license before you can actually use it. http://www.hp.com/go/ilo/docs
July 22, 201510 yr Author Many thanks. I thought there was a certain amount of functionality for free... will give it a go and see how far I get.
July 24, 201510 yr iLO stops working when an OS boots. So, you can really only use it for the "BIOS". You need the iLO Advanced key to make it actually do something. IMHO, iLO on the Gen8 is a waste of 5W. It's pointless.
July 24, 201510 yr Author I got this working, had to set it up to use the shared port but now all in order. I quite like the idea of being able to look at the server status in detail, but you're right, with the basic (free) license I believe you can only enter iLO during the boot sequence and not after. Also I thought iLO provided access to things like Wake-on-LAN, which it doesn't as far as I could tell.
July 25, 201510 yr You can power up the server from the OFF state using ILO. Including from the ILO phone app.

IMHO, iLO on the Gen8 is a waste of 5W. It's pointless. you can pick up a brand new ILO advanced key for as little as $23 (about £15) on ebay e.g. i bought this one and they emailed me the key (so no postage) and it works perfectly: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/110897570685
October 4, 201510 yr Author Thanks for the tip, £15 is a bit of a bargain. I presume that is for a lifetime activation?
October 4, 201510 yr The ilo advanced features are for the life of the server. The extra support is 12 months.
