Transferring Files

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I have managed to set up my unRaid server, and I love it so far.

I have the plex docker sorted. I just need to get all my files from my PC to the unraid server now.

I have never used networking before. My PC can 'see' my plex server on unraid. But I can't move any files over at the moment.

So I have a few questions....

1. How do I make my PC 'see' the unraid disks.

2. What are people using to transfer files over? An app?

3. I see people are using Terracopy, but I tried it, and it says the destination path isn't available

I apologise for the luck of knowledge about this stuff. This is my first experience with Linux based OS.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards,

Morten

Most of the defaults should allow you to see unRAID on the network.

How are your PC and unRAID server connected to the network?

What is the IP address of unRAID? See upper right corner of the webGUI.

What is the IP address of your PC? If Windows, Command Prompt - ipconfig.

Hi again Trurl....

The unRaid server is connected via cable. It's ip address is:  192.168.1.2

My PC is connected wirelessly. It's Ip address is : 192.168.1.3

My PC can see the Plex server from the unRaid server. But I just don't have access to transfer files over.

Cheers,

Morten

Did you set up a user within unRaid to match the user (login) for your desktop?

What is the Operating System of your PC? Windows 7, Windows 8, etc.

Are your unRAID and Windows on the same Workgroup? Settings - SMB

Yes... same workgroup name

So, I'm not sure what you are doing exactly, but the Plex Icon that shows up under network locations / devices isn't where you want to put files.

What you want to do go to network locations then you should see a folder with the name of your unRAID server (tower if you didn't change it also I believe that this location is also //servername/ or //tower/ in the navigation bar) in this folder you'll find any user shares or disk shares that you created. These Disk / User Shares are where you want to copy your files. Before you start copying gobs of data make sure you have your disk / user shares figured out, it's easier to spend time now making sure they are how you want them, then trying to go back and fix it later.

Once you have copied stuff to a folder like //tower/media/Movies/ then you add them to Plex via the Plex GUI (open a browser and point it to the ip address of your unRAID:32400 or http://192.168.1.2:32400) you should be able to add librarys, where you can specify that folder. You might also need to scan for changes, and wait for it to download metadata.

Have you read up about how Plex want's your media named / structured?

Hi Gundamguy,

Many thanks for your reply.

This is actually the problem I have. My PC isn't 'seeing' the unRaid tower. It's only seeing the Plex media network location. I haven't tried networking before so I'm not sure if it's a simple problem or task like mapping etc. Again, I've never needed to do that in my previous computing experience, so this is all new to me.

I'm trying to find out how to get my computer to 'see' the server itself, so I can copy all my media to the 'shares' that I have created.

Yep, I've read the media names/structures article. I actually have the whole plex system sorted. It's just getting my files from my PC to my unRaid.

Cheers,

Morten

Under SMB Settings, make unRAID the Local master, then reboot your PC.

Windows SUCKS at picking up other network computers.

Can you just open a new explorer window and type into the address bar \\TOWER\  (or whatever you named the server) (After you gain access to it at least once, hopefully it will show up under Network)

I'll try Squid....

I haven't managed to have any success with using the \\'name' method.

I was only able to access the Web GUI from the IP Address.

I'll keep trying.

Well, well, well.....

I did as you mentioned. in IE. Got the share map to show itself.

I managed to map the 2 shares I need. I managed to change the permissions on 1 of the folders. The other keeps giving me grief.

But this is very good progress. haha.

I've been at this, searching google all night. Many thanks Squid. I owe you big time.

Cheers,

Morten

Sweet. Did a system reset and got the last of the folders to allow me to copy/delete etc. All good.

My parity disk is still running at the moment. Should I wait for that to finish before copying all my files over?

Many thanks again for all your help guys....

Morten
