Network issue from new Windows 8.1 box

Good day, all. I have a new Windows 8.1 box that I've built that won't see my 6.0.1 UnRAID server. I can't ping it, can't connect to shares, can't connect to the GUI. It's as if it doesn't exist.

 

Ping reports "Destination host unreachable" and it never shows up in the arp table.

Tried putty to connect via ssh. Putty reports "Network error: Connection timed out"

 

Everything else on the network seems fine. I can ping my router, external sites, other devices on the network. I can surf, no apparent issues.

 

Other PCs and macs in the house can connect to the UnRAID server just fine, and I can see them from the new 8.1 box.

 

MB in the pc is a bit old. It's an Asus P6T Deluxe V2, with the current BIOS. Has 2 Marvell 88E8055 GbE controllers. No difference if I use either one.

 

One other odd thing though. I can't ping the 8.1 box, even with the firewall turned off.

I'm puzzled. Any ideas?

 

I did check through the forum and look at all the other relevant posts. No resolution.

Scott, Did you resolve the network issue?  My daughter's Win 8 laptop cannot see the my Raid server either.  However, my wife's laptop can see the Raid server and she also has Win 8.

 

Crazy!  I hate windows.

Have you tried connecting to it by IP address?

WHen I had something similar happen to me I checked the following.  Is your network config on your laptop set to Private or Public?  Also, on the Unraid server side do you have a workgroup?  If so, you have to make sure that your laptop is in the same workgroup via Control Panel, System, Workgroup. 

 

Those usually resolved the issues for me.

I do apologize, I have not been following this post. 

 

Current Status

Her laptop still cannot access the tower.  Her laptop is in the same workgroup.  She cannot access with the tower ip address.  She can see the tower in file explorer.

 

I have added a line in her registry to access known network devices (internet search of the issue).  I have removed her from the workgroup, restarted, added the machine back in the workgroup.  Her network connection is private.  Is there anything else I should try?

Try temporarily removing any security software (anti-virus, firewall, etc) and see if it works. Disabling is not enough, try complete removal. If that works, then once you reinstall the security software, it may still work, but if it breaks again, at least you know what to blame.

you've  tried connecting by IP address?

 

ala map a drive to \\<IP\share  or ping <ip>?

 

The deal is if the laptop cant resolve the hostname, it will act like that.

I have removed the AV software and turned off the firewall.  We can get to UnRaid with the ip address in file explorer but not with the name.

If you can get to it by IP but not by name you are having a DNS issue.

 

Does the computer in question have a hard coded IP address, or leasing an address via DHCP?  At a command line type "ipconfig /all" and "nslookup tower" (without the quotes) and post the output.

The pc in question is pulling the IP for both IPv4 & 6 automatically from the router.  Below is the is uotput of the ipconfig /all and the nslookup tower respectfully

Well for about two weeks, Yes.  Now the laptop can't access the Tower even with the IP address.

If your unRAID is set to DHCP and it is leasing an address, the address could have changed.  You really should give it a static address by creating a DHCP reservation in your router so that it always gets the same IP.  You can also just set it statically in the unRAID GUI, but better to do an address reservation for DNS reasons.
