August 11, 200916 yr Hey guys, Looking at throwing together an unRaid box as a more cost effective alternative to a Drobo so I can unify my storage with a little redundancy throw in for peace of mind. I m digging around and I can't see anything that resembles a capacity calculator. Now from what I’m reading total capacity = capacity of all assembled hard drives minus the biggest one (for parity) so an array consisting of... 1 x 2tb 2 x 1tb 1 x 500gb 2 x 300gb ========== TOTAL 3.1 tb Now i know there will be file system overhead and such so maybe 2.8 of usable space but is my maths ok or is there something I'm missing? I mean count up all the drives and discount the biggest?
August 11, 200916 yr Your biggest drive is a 2TB drive. It would be used for parity in your example. You may then use the remaining 2.8Gig for data. Your math is fine. Any additional drive you add will be entirely used for data. Joe L.
