July 30, 201510 yr How feasible is it to run XEN on an i5 with a desktop motherboard vs a Xeon + server motherboard? I want to use Plex (decoding up to two 1080 streams at a time) along with basic file serving and running 2 to 3 vm's to play around with. I would like to save some money for other upgrades I need on other computers. i need to replace an older P4 server that I was using to stream to an XMBC HTPC. I just purchased an Antec 1200 case to house everything and plan on filling it with 15 to 20 hard drives. This may be off topic but should I get an SSD for the VM ISO's? Thanks in advance!
July 30, 201510 yr Xen is not supported under unRAID v6.0 final (it was only available in early beta releases) so you need to use KVM if you want to use VMs. There should be no issue with running VMs on desktop hardware if you do not need to use hardware pass-thru to the VMs. If you do need hardware pass-thru then you need support for Vt-x and VT-d on the CPU+motherboard combination you decide to use. This is available on some desktop systems but not all.
