When logs rotate, rsyslog stop logging

Featured Replies

When your log rotates (syslog.1) due to size, rsyslog no longer logs to /var/log/syslog.

It creates the /var/log/syslog file but it remains at 0 bytes.

Restarting with /etc/rc.d/rc.rsyslog restart does not fix the issue

Stopping and starting rsyslog does not fix the issue

I have seen this error/bug when the syslog was rotated due to filesize.

Check free space in tmpfs with the df command at the console.

tmpfs            131072 131072        0 100% /var/log

So, I guess that explains why.  I would think the rotated log should be tgz'ed or something.

Are you using Dynamix System Statistics plugin? That seems to be the main culprit for many people. See here for fix.

Place this in the go file:

# resize log partition

mount -o remount,size=384m /var/log

The problem is something is filling up syslog faster than syslog can be rotated.  Whatever that is, should be fixed.  Can you post the huge syslog somewhere?  Maybe email to me: [email protected]
