August 3, 201510 yr Unraid said my CPU is at 69c, which seems to be the upper limit of where it should be. Now, it is under constant load with Folding@Home and Plex. Most fans I am finding are 50 dollars plus. Seems a bit much for a fan. Has anyone else dealt with this? Machine is in a Norco case, in the basement. Should Should be decently cool down there
August 4, 201510 yr With a 95 watt processor that's running near 100% utilization you definitely need better cooling than the stock cooler provides. $50 isn't really a bad price for a high quality CPU heatsink/fan combo. You can get some nice ones for a bit less ($35 or so), but that's not really much of a difference. It's also possible you didn't get the CPU seated correctly, and there's not a good thermal bond. You may want to remove the heatsink; very carefully clean off the bonding plate and CPU; and then re-install it with a high quality thermal compound. You'll need to do this anyway if you replace the heatsink -- but if you want to try it with the stock cooler you'll at least know for sure that wasn't your issue (before you spend the $$ for a new heatsink). Next time, look at the Intel boards/CPUs => you can get equivalent performance in a 35 watt i3 that will run notably cooler and work just fine with the stock heatsink. [Or significantly better performance with a 35-45 watt i7]
August 4, 201510 yr Don't run Folding@Home, it's a waste of time, and a waste of power. Problem solved.
August 4, 201510 yr If you have room, run one a Zalman CNPS9900ALED, or similar (all copper, large fan). I ran one on my 1055T and now on my FX 8320 works great even under full load.
August 5, 201510 yr Author thats part of the problem. I dont think I have room. I guess I could buy one and try. Im using a Norco 2212
August 5, 201510 yr Nope... not gonna fit, no way... seeing as the fan is taller than the case itself. My advice is either make a folding machine, or just plain stop.
August 5, 201510 yr Author I shut down F@H for a little while, and the CPU temp settled at about 60c which is 140F. With F@H running it goes up around 70c which is 158F. Seems that I might have a cooling issue unrelated to F@H. 140F seems warm. Maybe it is just dusty. Its worth mentioning that I am not having any problems. But I do not want to wait for them to start
August 5, 201510 yr What else is running when you have F@H off? 60C is a really high "idle" temp. My Celeron G1840 with 6 dockers running is at 31C. Ambient in the house is 23-24C.
August 5, 201510 yr Author Theres a VM running, but the CPU is only running at like 20%. Maybe I will try blowing it out with the air compressor. Or re-applying thermal paste.
