Switching from ESXI to Unraid

Featured Replies

My current setup:

1U Server

Supermicro X7DCA-L

Dual L5420 @ 2.5Ghz Passmark 6610

16 Gig ECC RAM

256 Gig SSD (VM storage)

3TB Red WD (TV storage)

2TB Green WD (Movie Storage)

I am currently running Pfsense and Windows 7 in VMs on the SSD. If is switch from ESXi to Unraid I can not run Pfense and will have to run it on another box or a hardware router.

Will my performance be as snappy as ESXI? Can I run Plex,Sonarr,CouchPotato,SABnzbd on the SSD and keep my media on the mechanical hard drives? I typicaly stream 3 to 5 streams off my server with Plex and currently have no buffering issues at all on my network after switching to and SSD. I was looking to add more storage in the near future.

Also can you point me in a direction of the best way to add to my current configuration. My 1U server can not fit anymore HDs but has a total of 3 unused SATA ports. I can not physically fit them in my case. I could transport the all my stuff to a new case but I'm not sure that this is cost effective.

Thanks for your time.

You could always run unRAID under ESXi...

Then you don't really have to give anything up. And with unRAID in ESXi, you can still run the dockers (Sonarr, Plex, etc.) from within the unRAID VM without issue.

Depends what you're looking for.

How is the performance of docker inside an Esxi server, I currently run an Esxi server with plenty of ram and most of my instances use very little ram. I have 5.0 UNraid inside of the Esxi server.

Thanks,

Jeff

Several folks on this forum are running UnRAID v6 under ESXi and report that Dockers run just fine in that environment.

I converted from esxi to unraid recently. Everything works fine but i do find Windows vm's are not running as "snappy" as they did in esxi.

I'm ging to try and run a dedicated hard drive for them. But i never did with esxi and performance was fine there.

I noticed that too.  Glad it wasn't just me.  I figured I had a configuration setup problem like odd number of CPUs pinned or something.

Did you make any headway in getting Windows VMs to run smoother under UnRAID?

No. Actually the only vm on my personal unraid server was an htpc.

I have now moved it to a dedicated PC.

I have a second server still running esxi with an important server 2012 vm.

But i'm still hesitant to convert that one over.
