August 17, 200916 yr so ive just found out about plug computers and was wondering what applications it can be used for with unraid, if any. here is one link to a plug computer company: http://plugcomputer.org/ has anyone heard of these? im just wondering if there is any way of simplifying my unraid config using this. i didnt see any info in the forum. please let me know if im mistaken.
August 24, 200916 yr It is always interesting to see new ideas, and new product platforms, but this one is not ready, at all. Perhaps in its second generation (or third), it may be worth discussing, and adapting unRAID to. It uses an ARM chip, unRAID currently is based on Intel CPU's. If Tom feels sufficiently motivated to obtain a suitable development environment, and adapt and recompile his Linux distro for this platform (a VERY big 'if'), he could load unRAID-for-ARM into its 512MB of NAND flash and should be able to get unRAID working, and access it across the network through its gigabit chipset. Unfortunately, unRAID is not very useful without drives, and this device does NOT have any standard IDE or SATA support or connectors, just a single USB port, for ONE external USB hard disk! Oh, it also has an SD card slot, for perhaps a 64GB SD card. An array of a single drive accessed though a USB connection, and a single SD card, hardly seems worth it. It is currently not expandable. The tiny size and very low power usage sound great. Perhaps it will turn out to be a useful platform for us in the future. It is already attracting attention as an application server, but a file server needs drives, lots of them, and fast access to them.

There are lots of devices like that... Here is one that is Intel 486SX compatible... http://bifferos.bizhat.com/ It has 100Mbit ethernet built in, 32MB Ram, and 1MB Flash... and a USB port, and has has some success in booting Slackware... It would take a LOT of effort, but because it is the same basic architecture as unRAID, it has a tiny chance of working... Unfortunately, unRAID does not work with USB disk drives, so you face a major challenge in getting it to recognize them to assign them, even if you do get it to bring up the management interface. The other HUGE challenge is unRAID might need more ram...but a swap file on a disk might work instead. It is inexpensive enough to experiment with... Oh yeah... no fans... and only 1 watt power consumption. Joe L.
