unRAID not responsive during clearing phase of new PATA HD

Featured Replies

I'm trying to build my array and am having some issues.  Here's my setup:

    Parity - 500Gb (SATA) -->ok

    Disk1 - 250Gb (SATA) -->ok

    Disk2 - 250Gb (SATA) -->ok

    Disk3 - empty

    Disk4 - empty

    Disk5 - 250Gb (PATA) -->new

    Disk6 - 250Gb (PATA) -->new

    Disk7-11 - empty

I hit "Start" to bring the disks online and to start the clearing and format process for disks 5 and 6.  During the clearing process (got up to 74% at one point), I lose connectivity to tower via the web interface and the local console.  I can still ping tower, but am unable to manage it or see what's going on (displays blank screen on tower).  So I have to reboot tower and begin the process all over again.

I've tried only connecting disk5... same problem.  I've tried only connecting disk6... same problem.  Both drives were working previously under Windows.  The only difference between these and my existing drives in the array is that these drives are PATA (UDMA) while my existing drives are SATA.

I'm not ruling out a hardware problem on my side, but I wanted to know if there are any suggestions from the more experienced crowd out there before I run some diags on my system.

P.S.  I've also experienced tower "disappearing" during large file copies to my SATA drives on the array.

Just taking a stab in the dark.  Does your /boot/config/disk.cfg file reflect the collection of SATA and PATA drives you've set up?

No, the IDE drives don't show up.  Here's a copy of my config file:

# Disk configuration

spindownDelay=1

parity=/dev/scsi/sdh4-4c0i0l0

disk1=/dev/scsi/sdh6-6c0i0l0

disk2=/dev/scsi/sdh5-5c0i0l0

disk5=/dev/hda

disk6=/dev/hdb

I'm running Syslinux version 3.20, Linux 2.4.33, unRAID Pro 3.0 (I think it's 3.0, just got it this weekend)

Also, I tried swapping out the ribbon cable and plugging them into IDE1 (instead of IDE0), to no avail.

Thanks for the help.

Hey,

Is there a solution for this yet?

I just installed 2 PATA Drives into my system and I am experiencing the exact same thing!

I'm running unraid 3.0 and using a ASUS P5LD2-VM-UAYGZ Motherboard.

Thanks for your help.

I chalked this one up to a hardware problem.  I replaced the motherboard and everything is happy now.
