New build advice

Long story (not so) short : i'm already thinking of changing my current unraid (hp microserver n40l) because it's really too noisy in my opinion (it's placed next to me,already changed psu fan with a noctua and still too noisy for my tastes) and i'm beginning to transcode to my ipad for my daughter and that cpu is really limited ofr the job.

My main gaming rig is a Fractal R3 with a Seasonic x660 PSU and an intel I5 3570k, and it's virtually mute, it's really really hard to hear it. Sadly the cpu does not support iommu and it's power hungry so i'm thinking to not reusing it.

So, my plan is to build a new unraid with a bunch of seagate 8tb (already own 2),1 cache drive (a WD green 2tb already own) with a few dockers (plex, tonido, jdownloader and maybe something else) and i hope a few virtual machines with full passthrough, as low power and cheap as possible.

I still do not know if i want to replace my gaming rig with it too (i really only play with my xbox one but sometimes i play some Eve Online or Heartstone, low gpu requirement games anyway, so maybe i can do it...)

My plan (i live in Europe):

- case Fractal R5

- bequiet or seasonic 600w psu

- haswell cheap motherboard with at least 6 sata ports (to reuse 16 gb DDR3 1600mhz ram i already own, sadly i read that skylake is not supporting DDR3)

- haswell cpu, maybe E3 1220v3 or an i5  (are those capable of hevc 1080p transcoding ? I hope cause i wanna encode in x265 soon using my work computers eheh)

- in case of windows 10 gaming rig usage... i already own a nvidia 770, is it ok for full passthrough ?

Any considerations or suggestions ?

Thanks a lot

After some thoughts, i'm leaning towards a rebuild of my gaming rig as an unraid server.

I need to swap the motherboard+cpu with Haswell ones to re-use my 32gb of ddr3 ram..planning a windows 10 vm passthrough with my nvidia 770.

Do you think there will be problems ?

What 1150 motherboard with 8 sata ports can you suggest me ? Will 1 NIC sharing between my windows10 and unraid give me problems ?

I haven't looked closely at video passthrough lately, but it was preferred to use AMD since they support being in a VM better. Doesn't mean your nvidia won't work, might just be more work.

I'd just search online for 1150 mbs with 8 satas, I think it might be a little tricky though without going with a server level board. A lot of the Z chipsets come with 6 sata3 ports these days.

Ok, so here is my updated plan, i badly need an advice on what can go wrong before spending the $$$ please

Here in Italy the ivy bridge i7 3770 is going to cost like the haswell one (4790), around 300 euro so :

- buy Haswell i7 4790

- buy a new 1150 motherboard with 6 sata

- use my 32 gb ddr3 ram

- use my AOC-SASLP-MV8 for expansions

- install unraid 6.1

- use my disks for data storage array on unraid with parity

- use a 256gb ssd as unraid cache for dockers and vm ONLY

- passthrough my nvidia gtx 770 to a windows 10 vm with 16 gb ram, always connected to my dell 24 inch monitor for general use, always on (like now).Passthrough my mouse, keyboard, integrated sound card and bluray drive to this.

- buy an nvidia 720 or amd 5450 to passthrough to an openelec vm (same ssd as the windows 10 one) connected to my lcd tv (video and audio). Passthrough of my usb IR receiver to control this via my logitech harmony remote

What can go wrong with my setup ? any advice ?

Thanks a lot
