Recycle Bin (vfs recycle) for SMB Shares

Featured Replies

The logging in the recycle bin has been converted to inotify.  There are several reasons that the logging was not working:

  • Samba has changed files being deleted from 'unlink' to 'moved'.  The new inotify watches the share .Recycle.Bins for files moved or created in those folders.
  • After adding a new share, the recycle bin was not updating to add the recycle bin to the new share.
  • Probably a few other issues also.

All should be working now.

brief testing on the new update and seems to be working as it should. thanks @dlandon, appreciate you!

Just deleted a folder by accident (one that is not on my backup NAS because not important enough to increase the disk size on the second NAS) .

Just checked my .recycle bin to discover it's empty.
Can you tell me it only works on windows  if you deleted the folder  in the left folder with the "map network drive" with a letter but not if you  deleted it on the right screen with "add a network location".
Thanks in advance

I have the same problem. Just installed the plugin and enabled the Reycle Bin feature, but files deleted over SMB don't go in the recycle bin, they just vanish.

This happens both through mapped drives and network drives.

It works in either situation.

Try restarting the recycle bin.  I beleive there is an issue when restarting the recycle bin and I'm looking into a solution.

Thanks for all your hard work on this plugin. I'm having trouble excluding directories. The directory I want to exclude has a space in it, which I've tried escaping, but it won't work. I've also tried a directory without a space and that didn't work.

E.g. I've tried:

share-name/directory name

share-name/directory\ name

share-name/directory-name

and

/share-name/directory name

/share-name/directory\ name

/share-name/directory-name

As an alternative, I tried excluding an entire share, which didn't work. I've restarted the recycle bin and can't think of anything else to try, it just doesn't seem to save my settings. I even disabled the recycle bin, stopped it and uninstalled the plugin, then deleted the recycle bin folder and whenever I deleted something, the folder would reappear with the deleted files inside.

Please can you assist?

This might be a regression error on one of the last updates.  I'll try and look at it and see if there's a fix

Just made another test.

Unraid 6.12.14

Update the recycle bin with  version 2025.03.03 / restart recycle bin

create 2 text files
add one with a map drive / add other one with network drive

remove both of them .

None in the recycle bin.

If i can help with any report tell me.

The update to version 2025.03.06 has been running for > 2 hours. The exact message is "Attention - operation continues in background [00713016]".

Should I cancel it or wait a little longer? If I cancel it, can I simply install it again?

Thank you very much for your support.

The update looks like it's not completed.  Diagnostics might have some information.

Until that message changes to completed (which on the length of time it won't), you'll be inhibited from installing other updates, new plugins etc.

Reboot or alternatively,

rm /tmp/plugins/pluginPending/*

will fix you (Or, attempting to install another plugin within Apps will also give you the option to clear the pending flag)

If after that (or the reboot) there's no updates available, you should be good

I noticed after I had a power outage today and sudden shutdown that the recycle bin logging seems to be broken. It's not showing the size of the recycle bin and instead is displaying "Recycle Bin Total Size: ?" and nothing shows up under "Shares" or "Deleted FIles" after I tried enabling logging of deleted files and testing it. The basic functions of moving items to the recycle bin folders and then emptying when I initiate the empty process remain working. I also tried uninstalling and reinstalling the plugin but to no avail.

As far as I can tell this is the only issue after the shutdown.

Thanks a lot! I will try this!

Edit: Yes, it works! Great and quick support here - unbelievable!

I'm having issues with the Recycle Bin plugin. I've just updated to the most recent version of the plugin, as well as upgrading Unraid to 7.0.1.

Recycle bin is catching deleted files in the correct folders on my shares, but the WebUI shows total size as "?", and when I try to restart it from the plugin config I'm getting the following syslog output;

Correction

I'm just adding that I'm also getting an inotify segfault after upgrading to 7.0.1 today (and a plugin update).
Happens on plugin start, and also plugin restart as shown here:

Screenshot2025-03-08at10_32_50am.thumb.png.32a1c469b601b386be6c7d71984bcffa.png

First thing to check if only to rule it out is a memtest.  But, it is also possible that inotify has an issue.

Ok will run memtest later and report back. I was just reporting it as it’s the exact same error message as post above mine.

9 hour memtest, 6 passes, no errors. That's the longest I can do, need to bring the server online again.

After reboot, segfault error again. This is the only mention of any segfault in the logs.:

Hi!

Same "Recycle Bin Total Size: ?" issue here regardless of what I do, however not errors related to itthat I can see/fin the logs.

Mar  8 14:30:42 i9 ool www[552368]: /usr/local/emhttp/plugins/recycle.bin/scripts/rc.recycle.bin 'restart'
Mar  8 14:30:42 i9 recycle.bin: Stopping Recycle Bin
Mar  8 14:30:44 i9 recycle.bin: Starting Recycle Bin

.Recycle.Bin exits (and or is recreated after I delete it when empty) and deleted files via SMB end up inside it as seemengly usual, including emptying it.

It just seems to not able to, at least, display the size of it AND it is not showing below (in the Share section) a link to see/access the files in there.

Same here. Using latest plugin, Unraid 7.0.1

Getting segfaults if I enable logging, shows ? as Recycle Bin's size

Tried removing plugin, rebooting, reinstalling the plugin, same thing.

[EDIT]
Files not showing up either

Thanks...

Missing file

me too

This app does not work anymore on my pools since I updated it to 2025.03.06.

It does not show deleted files, it does not count the space of deleted files, and so on.

it does show on the upper right corner that it is running.

First I did stop and start. but the same: not working.

Then I used the restart button.  still not working.

uninstalled and reinstalled from CA: still not working.

Where/how can I get an older version that is still working?

unraid 7.0.1 pro on 2 PCs

EDIT1: in my ".Recycle.Bin" folders I can find some of the deleted directories and files.

Settingsd-Screenshot 2025-03-09 235639.png

binScreenshot 2025-03-09 235907.png

EDIT2:

one day later recycle bin works fine on one of those 2 PCs. 🤪

On the other (see screenshots above) it is still broken.

EDIT3:
Looks like the problems are solved with 2025.03.16.
Works again fine for me.
Thanks!

Stopped working on both my Unraid serves. One is ver 6.12.10 and the other 6.12.9.

I have started and stopped the recycle bin several times on both computers.

Never had this issue before.

Cheers

Add another one to the not working list. I'm on unraid 7.0.1 and had a recent brown-out that power cycled my unraid server. Similar to others above, all I get now is:

recy1.thumb.png.fcec1c3a627e1c2812cc180f89b29c8c.png

recy2.thumb.png.5572fe5a176a357787c274fb659bc1ef.png

I've restarted the plugin & the server a few times and it still won't work.

Add me to the list as well.  I'm on Unraid 7.0.0, plugin version 2025.03.06
