unRaid 6, USB and Licensing Query

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I bought a pro license for unRAID back in 2011 and stopped using it around 2013 (needs grew and ended up moving to Linux and currently windows server) however my needs have now changed again and having checked out the features of unRAID 6 I think I want to make the move back again, but have a few questions that I'm hoping somebody could help with.

1 - will my 2011 'unRAID Pro' license work with the latest version (6.0) I noticed different price tiers available causing my confusion.

2 - I have lost my original USB stick, I have seen the page on the limetech main page highlighting some USB's I could use, however I was curious as to whether I am limited to just these. I have one of these currently spare, can I use this?

3 - if yes to both of the above, how do I transfer my licenses to the new USB stick? I have a backup of my last configuration (4.0) if that's of any help.

Edit...

4 - all of my content on the drives I'd like to move to unRAID are currently in NTFS format, will unRAID be able to recognize this or will I need to reformat all of these drives for unRAID to be able to use?

I look forward to your responses

Thanks

Yes - licenses remain valid whenever you bought them.

The requirement is that the USB drive you use must have a unique ID (some manufacturers give all their USB drives the same ID).  Not sure whether the one you mention satisfies that requirement.

As long as you have the .key file for your license (which should be in the backup) then if you place it in the config folder on the USB stick you will be able to do an online transfer of the license from the unRAID GUI.  If not then you will need to drop an email to Limetech explaining the issue and they should be able to help you.

4 - all of my content on the drives I'd like to move to unRAID are currently in NTFS format, will unRAID be able to recognize this or will I need to reformat all of these drives for unRAID to be able to use?

unRAID does not (currently at least) support NTFS as a format for an array drive.  You will therefore need one drive that is empty (or whose contents you are happy to lose) to add as the initial disk to unRAID.  You can then plug in one of the NTFS drives (the Unassigned Devices plugin helps here) and transfer its contents to the unRAID array.    Once all the contents are transferred then that disk can be assigned to the array to be reformatted and its space made available.  Repeat for each drive.

It is optional whether you assign the parity drive before doing initial transfer.  If you do not then transfers are faster but you are unprotected against a disk drive failing during the data transfer process.  Remember that the parity drive must be at least as big (if not bigger) than the largest data drive, and this might affect which drive you intend to eventually be the parity drive.
