[SOLVED] Parity drives shows as unformatted and loss of disk after loss of power

Featured Replies

Unraid 5.0.-rc12a - yes I need to upgrade

I was not home but kids said big bang before power down in neighborhood.  I'm assuming spike as I lost several smart light switches.

Now for system - Origional 15 bay sold by LimeTech

Parity drives has the dreaded blue symbol and disk 2 shows as non-existent.  Other 13 dries appear as good.

No cache being used Parity and 14 data drives.

I'm attaching Syslog and Smart from Parity?

Should I reiserfsck the parity?  Never had a Parity go blue on me.

TIA

  Joe

Parity has no filesystem so "unformatted" is meaningless for parity, as is reiserfsck. Post a screenshot.

I replaced the supposed bad drive but still will not allow a start.  Message is "Too many wrong and/or missing disks!" but only disk 2 is wrong as I just replaced it with a spare.  Parity is still blue.

Blue indicates a new disk. Disk 2 cannot be rebuilt unless all of the other disks are green. Was parity installed previously? Reinstall the original disk 2 and post its SMART report.

I'm surprised your UPS didn't absorb the spike -- I've seen some pretty major electrical hits (direct lightning strike that actually put a hole in the roof in one case) that took out the UPS, but didn't bother the attached computer gear.

At this point a rebuild isn't an option -- and as noted above you can't "rebuild" parity.  Your only option is to replace the failed disk #2 and restore its data from your backups.    Your parity drive may also be bad -- I'd look at the SMART data and, if it shows any issues, replace the drive.

There IS a chance that the drive #2 issue is a failed controller and/or a cable that needs to be reseated ... but I suspect it's more likely the drive has simply failed.

Smart for Parity looks good ie "no errors logged".

I'm going to power down and check internals but if everything looks seated what's the next step?

How do I get the array to come back online given it still says  "Too many wrong and/or missing disks!"  I've tried putting a new disk and saying "no disk" on my bad/missing disk but still does not give me the option to start things up so I can create a new parity and format that new disk.

TIA

Sorry more info..

Original disk will not come up to post SMART results.

Parity was not new.. well a couple years ago it was upgraded but has performed perfectly, rebuilding and upgrading disks without any issue..  Just came up blue after this power hit.

Just do a New Config (on the Utils tab).

This a good time to upgrade or should I wait until things are running again?

Wait. One thing at a time.

You may/may not want to move to v6, but as a minimum you should update to v5.0.6 (the final v5 release).    Moving to v6 is a bit more involved, so you may want to wait until all is restored before doing that, but I'd definitely update to v5.0.6 before even bothering with the New Config.
