Following the latest update my unraid server config has broken, shares are now unmountable and un readable, and my vm configuration has also vanished is there a way to roll back ?

How did you update (and from what release).  It is very unlikely that the config disappearing would be rectified by attempting to roll back. 

 

There have been reports of updating via the GUI failing that can be corrected by a manual update (basically copying the bzimage and bzroot files from the unRAID download to the USB stick.).

I updated from 6.1 to the latest version 6.1.3

On the flash drive, there should be a "previous" folder.  Copy bzimage / bzroot from it back onto the root of the flash to roll-back.

 

But, it sounds like something didn't quite work right during the upgrade, so I would try it again

I've tried rolling back but shares are still not appearing in network and i can't browse to them in explorer :-(

My shares list in the unraid GUI is also not showing anything

According to that you do not have User Shares enabled.    With the array stopped check under Settings->Global Share Settings

It's enabled and ive rebooted, its still not showing my server on the network sadly

I've plugged a monitor in and i can see an error that says chown invalid users 'nobody:users' also smbd no process found
