[SOLVED] Server freezing after a week of uptime

Featured Replies

So I've been waiting to post about this, but it just happened for the 3rd time. I've had pretty simple setup running for years now (I can't post specs now, but I can later if that helps, I'll explain why) and about a month or so ago I updated to v6 and I'm currently on 6.1.2. For the last 3 weeks, every time the box hits one week of uptime it freezes to the point where I have kill the power and restart it. It happened again last night and right now it is still sitting in the hanging state (I left it this way incase I can get logs or whatever off of it), where I can't get to it from another computer on the network. I'm not using any dockers or anything "fancy" like that on the set up. Any ideas or things to check on? Has anybody else seen this? Thanks in advance.

Post diagnostics.

If I go ahead and restart the box there won't be any useful logs or info on it still will there? Thanks.

I cut the power and restarted everything, parity check is running now. Not sure if it will be of any use, but I've attached the syslog that I pulled when the box came back up. Thanks.

Parity check is complete, no errors found.

When it hangs, can you telnet into the box or is it completely unresponsive?

  • Author

I'm pretty sure the box is completely unresponsive, but if/when it happens again I'll try to telnet in. Would that allow me to grab a log? Is there any reason to think 6.1.3 will help? I'm open to other suggestions of things to try if it hangs again. We'll know next Sunday, I guess :P

Yes, you can run the diagnostics script from the command prompt if you can telnet into the server.  6.1.3 probably won't hurt, but you should look at the release notes to see if there is anything applicable to your setup.

So here we are at next Sunday and the box is frozen again. I can't access it via the website like normal, I can't get into any of the shares and I can't telnet into the box. I'll give it a few hours after this post before I kill the power and restart it in case there are any ideas or other things to try. When it's back up I'll probably upgrade to 6.1.3 since it's out there. Thanks in advance for any help.

Can you get to the console using a keyboard?

I plugged in a monitor and keyboard and got nothing at all on the screen.

Killed the power and restarted it, everything came back up fine, as usual.

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but I've had a similar issue a few times over the last week.  But lets go with right now:

WebUI is responsive, I can run smart tests on drives.

I can ssh in and most commands are functional

Any access to the array, local (via ssh), samba, etc, (haven't tried nfs) is non functional.  Attempting to access anything under /mnt/user is non functional (samba) or locks the console (ssh).

It appears I can access the disk share roots, but not any folders within them (or maybe not, it worked once...)

I've got a VM (Windows 7) stored on a cache only share and with a passed through (non-array) disc, and that VM is currently fully functional.

I've attached my diagnostics.  I don't see anything that, to my untrained eye, jumps out to me as wrong.

Any ideas?  Anything I can/should try to get more info?  I'm fairly confident I can reboot the box and all will be OK again.

So it turns out this isn't being caused by unraid at all, and in fact the box will stay up for longer than a week. The issue was coming from a scheduled back up I had running with easeUS todo backup. I don't know why this suddenly became a problem, since I've been using this for back-ups for years. I'm going to upgrade the program tomorrow and re-create the schedules backups, hopefully that will straighten everything out. If anybody has any suggestions for good automatic back up programs for windows please let me know. I'll update the thread with [sOLVED]. Thanks guys.

I dumped that one and got Acronis True Image. Found out easeUS is a Chinese company and felt uneasy (not that US companies any better) about using it.

PS using True Image for a weekly backup to UnRaid share... daily changed files backup I am using Backblaze cloud backup. Runs auto and can either backup in real time or at a specified time each day.
