Replacing 2 disks with one larger new disk

Featured Replies

I just upgraded to v6.1.3  I have two older disks in my array that I am going to replace with one larger one.  Can someone confirm and just give me a little peace of mind that the process is the following:

1) Put the new disk in the machine and preclear it (I sorta expected this to be something I could do via the web gui by now).  At 3TB, this will probably take a couple days or so.

2) Using a telnet session, copy data from each of the two older disks to the new one.

2a) Using rsync or some other tool, compare the data on the old disk with the new disk to make sure nothing was lost

3) Stop the array

4) Remove the two old disks from the array and then add the new one back in and restart the array

4a) This should trigger the system to re-calculate parity.  Let it.

5) Profit

Did I miss anything?  I'm assuming that having the new drive be formatted as XFS while the older disks (This process will leave me with 2 older, 2TB disks, in the array along with the new 3TB disk) are still Reiserfs won't be a problem.  I will eventually replace the 2TB disks with newer disks at some point, but that might be a year or more away.  Any issues with having a 'mixed' array like this?

Thanks,

Chris

Edit: FWIW, I did find the Preclear plugin.  I don't get the new disk until tomorrow, but I'm looking forward to not having to telnet into my machine to do this!

Once you remove the two drives and restart the array you will need to do new config to rebuild parity.

As noted, you need to do a New Config to reset the assigned disks.    Then when you start the array it will do a parity sync.    After the parity sync completes, do a parity check to confirm all went well.  Then you're ready to go ...

As for a "mixed" array (i.e. both Reiser and XFS disks) ... you're correct => there's no problem at all with this configuration.
