RAM Issue, Modern Diagnose Method?

Featured Replies

Have had a couple of my VM's crash randomly over the past couple of days. Decided I should run a Memtest, as the issues only cropped up when I had 3-4 of my VM's on, using 20G of my systems 32G ram. With caching, Linux only showed about 300 MB free.

Upon memtest, got an absolute ton of red line, failures. I have not run a hardware diagnosis in ages, as I have not needed to. The original method was each stick of RAM, one at a time, in each slot on the motherboard, as the issue could be RAM or the slot itself. Is this still the only(or best) method? Does memtest show me which sticks had the failure when testing all 4 at once? A snapshot of the initial test in process is below. At the 40% complete mark, I had something like 10,000 errors.

Any advice will be well received. Looking to get this back up ASAP.

mcelog is a common tool for determining which DIMM is involved, but that relies on the BIOS providing good information. I am not sure these are even in unRAID, but if not they can be added.

The practice of testing a single DIMM at a time comes from the complexity of getting good info. It is very simple to isolate the faulty component. With more than one DIMM installed, the memory could be interleaved making part determination difficult.

Turns out Memtest seems to run insanely quicker than 6-7 years ago when I last probably tinkered with any of it, haha.

I was able to isolate the single stick in a matter of about 20 minutes. Now to run the remaining 3 through a few extended passes for the feel good and process this RMA.

That RAM should come with a Lifetime warranty.

Thanks. :)

Contacted support, rather painless process. Got a confirmation email within a few minutes, with instructions to send the defective stick back. Only thing I don't like is they say to use the original packaging. Yeah okay, I kept that. Chat support told me a bubble wrapped envelope would be fine. A minor annoyance having to contact them to clarify that.
