So I have been loading up my new server with files this past week and all is well, created a few new user accounts and changed some permissions.

my acct ...... has full read write

      other "guest"accts.........have read only

trying to organize files from laptop in other room (not primary computer I usually use) gets me read but no write access says i need permission from "nobody"? is that the root acct?

in any case, it does not ask me to log on at all so I suspect it is defaulting to one of my other (lower permissions) guest user accts i was using before on this particular laptop. How do I log out as one user and log in with another user account.

You do not mention the OS on the laptop?

If it is Windows then open the Windows Credentials Manager and remove any existing credentials for the unRAID server.    You will then be prompted to provide a username/password when you next connect, and at this point provide the one that will have the correct permissions for what you want to do.
