September 11, 200916 yr Hey all, It's been a while since I last visited as my server has been running perfectly. The time has come to upgrade my parity drive from 1TB to a 1.5TB Samsung plus add a few more 1.5TB's. I see that the Seagate's has some issues that involved some pre-formatting. I was wondering if there is anything that I need to do beside just plug this hard drive in and set it as parity? Thank you, Mike

Thank you, Mike I would run the preclear_disk.sh script on it before assigning it a place in your array. It would weed out a drive prone to early mechanical failure before you trust it with your data. Joe L.

Thank you, Mike One of my servers is using 15x Seagate ST31500341AS since February (I think). Be sure that your drives have the latest firmware. Seagate 1.5TB drives had some issues with older firmware. That has been fixed around last years end. Regards Harald
September 11, 200916 yr Joe. Where is this preclear script that you speak of? Here: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=2817.0
September 15, 200916 yr I just got two of these drives this afternoon and I'm preclearing the first now. I'll let you know if I encounter anything unusual. I've also got 4 of the Seagate 1.5TB drives in the array.
September 16, 200916 yr Author woo: I ran the preclear script on both drives and everything worked perfectly!
September 18, 200916 yr If the drive temps listed on the unRAID server page are accurate (and honestly I don't know if they are), these babies run cool. Even under load they are staying around 34 degrees, versus about 45 degrees for my 1.5TB Seagates.
September 18, 200916 yr The Samsung I have in my array is a 750GB version that spins at 7200 RPM and it has ALWAYS run cooler then any of the seagates i have, and the WD's for that matter. My Samsung runs about 32 underload when doing a full parity check and around the 27-28 mark when playing a video from it.
September 21, 200916 yr Yeah, I should mention that my server room is fairly hot and my 15 drives are packed pretty tight in my Coolermaster case so my absolute temps may be a bit on the high side. But the relative temps of all of my Samsungs (500GB, 1TB, and now 1.5TB) are well below the Seagates (1TB and 1.5TB) that I have in the system. I wonder if their temperature sensors are calibrated differently or if they really are cooler? It seems odd that they would be 5 degrees or so cooler even when the system has been sitting idle and I spin up the drives to check the temps.
September 21, 200916 yr I wonder if their temperature sensors are calibrated differently or if they really are cooler? I put my mark 1 hand on my 750 gb samsung drive during a parity check and it was clearly cooler then all of my other drives. Based on the perceived difference vs indicated temperature I beleive the samsung drives run cooler. I have not done a thermocuple test to prove that the indicated temperature matches the real temperature though. YMMV
